Ever have one of those moments?

I had to rebuild the carburator on my wife's 65 fury. Just an easy one barrel. This is the first "working on a car moment" I have got to have in my new garage.

So I am all set up, I even built a workbench out of s wood. I am pumped to get into this carb. I knew it would be easy, almost fun even...

Until...

I knocked my tray of wrenches down between the grille and radiator. CLANG!!! Wrenches all over the floor. So I reach down in there to collect the ones that are down by the radiator... My hand is wet... Awww ^%$#^! One of the wrenches put a hole in the radiator and it's spraying all over the place!

Long story short, the carb rebuild went ok, but now I can't find a radiator for less than $200. Did I mention ^#$%^&%#!!!?

hmm how funnny, i had a lame issue today too. ironic. I left my dads house to go get some gas. Turning onto the main road i see some kids checking out my car. (my 5.0 stang). so i nail it get her sideways and head about 1/2 mile up. Go to turn into the gas station, no power steering. (WTF).  i knew the belt flew off. so i fire her up, make it back to the road i turned off of. cars in the hot range on the temp gauge. shut her down right there. i look around and see my belt on the side of the road. and a puddle of coolent behind my car. so long story short my dad had to tow me back.

what a hellova saturday!

Sorry to hear you took your rad out. i didnt do any damage to my car other then it needs a new belt. stupid alternator bolt backed out!

The other day I was working on the boat.  One side complains at idle about water flow.  So some old timer told me to check the thermostat.  Broke both the top two bolts off.  Spent 2 days drilling/tapping them out.  Oh, and the thermostat is fine.
My car is a gravity hybrid.  The gasoline engine gets me up the hills, and gravity gets me down.

Just wait till your working under the hood at the JY and you blast the whole kit into a half disassembled engine bay.  I had to pull the lower intake to get all the tools back.

I would think if a wrench put a hole in a radiator that easy it was probably needing replaced anyway.

+1

I would almost be thankful to find a soft radiator like that compared to the alternative, 100 degree day 50 miles from home............
...and there was light!

The thing is, that radiator is cleeeean (considering the car is a 1965). I mean, no rust, hardly even any bug guts, the thing looks pretty new. It's not a repro, and they don't make that radiator anymore. I was surprised that it sprung a leak so easily too!

A local radiator shop is taking it tomorrow, so I wll know by wednesday if it can be patched or if I need a recore.

PS- thanks for the other stories guys, heh. Makes me feel a little better :P

Welp, they said the radiator is shot. They said it is an original, non-recored, 45-year-old, super-soft, ruined radiator. heh. Then he procedes to say, "hey, you might be in luck!" as he goes into the store room and pulls out a dusty old box. He says "I ordered an old plymouth radiator core back in the day for a guy who never showed up. It's been back here for years!" Long story short, it was the on I needed. Incredible, since that radiator was only found in 1964 and 1965 chrysler c-bodies with that specific engine.

$225 and one day later, I have a like-new radiator. I went ahead and did the thermostat and tranny cooler lines while I had it out.

Now with the rebuilt carb, and all that other stuff, it runs friggin' awesome.

So a $22 project ended up costing me about $300. But, I guess it was worth it.
