v8 tach swap into v6 July 05, 2010, 10:30:12 PM ok, so I have searched. And searched, and searched. And searched. And yet, I cannot find this out for sure. I read the info on coolcats that if you are going to put a TC tach into your v6 you should just have to switch out the resistor with a 75k ohm. I assume this means the sport already has a 50k ohm in it, so either way the 75k ohm should be going into mine. However, I went to radio shack today, and could not find either a 75k ohm or 50k ohm(just for the hell of it) resistor in the whole bin. All I could find were variants of 1k, 10k, 100k, and so on. There were all sorts of 5.6 ohm and the like, but nothing in the 7's. I don't know shiznit about electronic components, so does this actually exist somewhere just not at "the shack"? or do I have to put something else in there? Or am I not understanding the numbers correctly? Quote Selected
v8 tach swap into v6 Reply #2 – July 05, 2010, 11:00:06 PM duherrrrr:dunce: well, i guess a little internet searching doesn't hurt! I was just trying to hope I could find one in a local shop other than paying for shipping and markup and bs. I mean $1.50 + $9.00!!! shipping = $10.50 when RS had 5 of the other ones in a pack for 99c... oh wellbut at least I know I can get it. thx:Dis this thing directional or does it matter which way I put it in? Sry, like I said I dont know anything about this stuff...I dont know an amp from a volt or an ohm from a watt....:wtf: Quote Selected
v8 tach swap into v6 Reply #3 – July 06, 2010, 12:29:16 AM With the Mustang V6 cluster I am using Ford mde it really easy for me to convert the tach from 6-cyl to 8-cyl function. All I had to do was run a key-on jumper to the unused contact on the back of the tach and that made it function for a V8. Quote Selected
v8 tach swap into v6 Reply #4 – July 06, 2010, 10:29:12 AM Resistors are not polarized(directional), just install it and go... If you have a large electronics supply house in your area they should have 75K resistors(prob a pack of five)...The sport uses a 47K I believe but the face has a slightly different sweep, so a 51K works good when converting the TC tach, which normally uses a 100K... On those I usually add a second 100K across the original which effectively reduces resistance to 50K... BTW if you wind up with a R/S assortment, something like a 27K & 47K in series could be used... But remember, you'll need to learn to read the color bands or use a ohm meter to be sure you have correct value... Quote Selected
