88 5.0 making popping noises from exhaust? April 11, 2005, 09:49:14 PM What would cause it to make a popping noise. Seems like it does it when it is at around 1000- and up RPMs. Im not sure what it could be? Also when my friend check the oil, he said it was thin-like and smelled like gas was in the oil, but would that make it to pop pop? Anyone know? Thanks Quote Selected

Re: 88 5.0 making popping noises from exhaust? Reply #3 – April 12, 2005, 09:41:28 AM the fuel your smelling in the oil is from improper combustion, meaning your getting cylinder wash, fuel ending up in the crank case. Quote Selected

Re: 88 5.0 making popping noises from exhaust? Reply #9 – April 14, 2005, 09:34:16 PM Quote from: 87tbird302anyone?The first thing that should be done is scan the EEC system for codes. But without a better description of you problem, you arn't likely to get a lot of help online. The gas in the oil is because of either a over rich condition(possibly MAP sensor or fuel pressure regulator), or maybe a iginition problem(spark plugs, wires, dist cap). Quote Selected

Reply #10 – April 14, 2005, 11:02:01 PM Do you know where I can find a diagnostic tester for a decent price? oh yea, what is the MAP sensor? thanks for the imputs, I appreciate it. oh yea to confirm things, when you run codes where do you plug it into: the EEC or ECU? I believe it is EEC, but some people were telling me ECU, so i just wanted to confirm things. THanks again. Quote Selected

Tells the EEC/ECU/Computer how much vacuum is in the manifold relative to the outside air pressure. It lives on the firewall behind the manifold and various other pipes and hoses.... Quote Selected
Re: 88 5.0 making popping noises from exhaust? Reply #14 – April 19, 2005, 09:14:08 PM I figured since I had gas in my oil, that may cause it to backfire... would anyone else agree? Im going to drain the oil, and go from there. Quote Selected
