Stupid header question

I got myself some shorty headers for my v6 and I was wanting to install them myself, to save some money (and keep the exhaust guys out of my engine bay), but I do not want to pay to have the car towed up to the exhaust shop. So, would it be as stupid of an idea as I think it is to drive the car up with just the headers attached?:o Prolly start meliting stuff and setting things on fire...:flame: I did something similar when I cut off my pipes right past the cats under the tranny and drove it up and nothing happened, but this is a LOT closer to vital engine wiring, etc, soooo what do you guys think? Is the extra $50 in towing definitely worth it? I mean, 1500F isn't THAT hot, right:screwy:

How far is the ler shop? I'd have mine trailered,but it's up to you in the end.

How hard would it be for you to drive the car with stock exhaust to their place,let the car cool down,swap the headers on in the lot,then let them do what they need to do?

the shop is about 12-15 mins out depends on traffic. Like I said, I drove up there before like that and everything was fine, but the pipes dumped right under the tranny, just not in the ENGINE BAY, so I'm a little worried.  I like to drive it there and work on it, yes, but I dono if they'd appreciate that, you know, esp since it would take prolly two hours and some intense :sawzall:'ing, b/c my y-pipe bolts are STUUUUUCK. (when I did the engine swap, I had take the manifold off the engine and leave it attached to the downpipe haha). And, I would LOVE to get it towed up, but nobody I know has a truck and trailer and I really don't wanna get a wrecker to come get it cause I'm one of those really cheap/broke basterds who constantly tries to make a dime into a dollar, but I guess if I have to, I have to. I mean ~$50 extra is better than ~$150 extra right! I think I'll ask them about working on it there though, might not be too bad since I found out I might actually be getting a job there next week if things go right :D :D :D

Cut your Y Pipe in half.  Leave about 1 ft of pipe on either half.  Bolt it up and go.  Problem Solved.  (I'm a King Penny Pincher BTW)
My car is a gravity hybrid.  The gasoline engine gets me up the hills, and gravity gets me down.

Are you saying what I think you mean, as in bolt the y pipes up to the headers afterward? cause I don't think my 1 5/8"(?) pipes are gonna bolt up to my 2" headers are they???

You might have to oblong the holes on the Y-Pipe.  I have stock mustang shorties that I have bolted to both 2.0 and 2.5" pipes without any issue.  Even if it has a huge leak, it should push most the fire away from the body.

The bigger issue, I'd imagine, is that you will also need some O2 extensions and drill a hole in the stock Y.  The stock location for the O2 sensor (on our cars) is in the manifolds.  Mustangs have them mounted in the H-Pipe.  I took some Teflon coated wire and extend my O2 sensor harness about 5 inches to get them to reach when I swapped over.

Yeah, ok. I like that idea. I'll see if I can make em fit and if not, I'll just call a wrecker. I am aware of the O2 sensor problem, but luckilly I do only have one on my car so I think I'll put it right in my H pipe afterwards, and just drive it up there w/out it cause I've done it before without any problem. I am a little concerned about the EGR tube though, b/c it IS NOT made for my engine set up, but the exhaust guys said they could make it happen, so I guess I'll find out... Really  me off about the sensor though, b/c my last pair actually had bungs in them, but then they got stolen.....:beatyoass::beatyoass::beatyoass: if I ever find that guy....

If you are getting a job there, I would just wait until you work there and get in good with them so you can take full advantage of the resources available there.

I know all about headers... I have tried them all it seems... Oh wait we are not talking about header panels are we... LOL!

Well, job is a no go, which means I am now officially UNEMPLOYED!!!, so headers will definitely get put off later, but they did say I could do the job in their PL so at least thats figured out.
