Clock power wire....

Which wire is for the power to the factory clock?I'm thinking I may need to tap in the compass power to it.Still unsure though.As it sits,when I have the clock wire to the fuse block for power and I have to reset the compass in the mirror every time I drive,so,maybe I need a new power source.

I just investigated this after getting my digital clock working again. The clock units are carry over from 1983-84 to 85-88 models. The harness has four wires in the four pin connector. I cannot recall the colors. You have 12+ which is constant all the time for the memory, then you have 12+ that comes on with the ignition switch. There is a third wire that dims the display when the lights are turned on at night which if I recall it's the typical blue/red stripe wire that supplies all dash lights. The remaining black wire is ground.

What it sounds like you need is a wire that retains memory when the key is off. That means 12v+ all the time. Does the compass have both a connection for 12V+ when the key is turned on and 12v+ constant that should be used for the memory?

What compass are you using? A Ford factory part from a donor vehicle or some aftermarket thingy?

Here's the mirror.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110423963205&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

It has 4 wires....

black= ground

hite/black=door jamb switch hookup to use the mirror lights as dome lights when the door is open

blue/black= I think that's power to the compass

green/black=I think that's power to the lights

Unless one is constant and one is power,I do not know......yet.

I believe this should be simple. It should be such that the compass retains memory through the constant 12V+ that supplies the map lights which should be the green/black wire. The blue/black wire for the compass should be on/off with the ignition key. Ground is ground of course. The white/black wire should go to the door pin switches to provide a ground bypassing the black wire which is run from the individual map light switches when the doors are opened.

I hope that helps! You already have constant 12V+ to the map lights if they operate with the individual switches with the doors closed.  What you need to make sure of is that you have 12v+ on-off with the ignition key.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I just bought a mirror with map lights only. Cheap, cheap, cheap... I suppose I could find one with a compass too!
