Types of transmissions....

I have a manual out of my 84 TC and a manual in my 88 TC.....

For those not familar, I am building the 84 TC and Using the 88 for parts. Which model transmissions do I have, which would be better to rebuild for a 300 hp goal?

They're the same tranny, the "4 cylinder" T5 rated at 240 lb-ft of torque. If you're using the 88 tranny in the 84 you'll want to use the bellhousing off the 84 tranny, as it's got a cable clutch (unless you want to swap the 88 pedals in too)

Well there you go. I didn't even know the 87 4-cyl tranny was a World Class, I thought that was reserved for the V8 trannies :D So what makes a World Class a World Class?

I don't see an 84 T-Bird in that link, is it the same as 85-86?

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Main differences, World Class Trannys have a different type syncro that are fiber lined vs the conventional brass type(all but 5th)... Also they use needle bearing between the gears and main shaft, other bearings are also revised...

Not exactly sure when the 4cyl went to the WC tranny, but the 2.3 '87 Mustang T5 I overhauled, because it had 90w gear lube in it, was a WC(rips the lining off the syncros)... Got a deal on a fairly nice '87 trunk 4cyl for $1000 because of the tranny(this was '93) ... My '86 GT also had a WC, in fact I've never been into a non-WC... But everything I've read says they were introduced in '85, also the parts I bought from Ford for the '87(this was before overhaul kits were avail) had E5 pref part nos...

I have seen some places state that WC transmissions were used from the start of production in 1985 and other places that have said it wasn't until late '85.
My car has a build date of June 19, 1985 and it has a WC tranny.

NWC takes gear oil, WC takes ATF.

I dug out all my specification books last night and the '84 was the same as '85-'86.

In summary:

wow, lots of info here.

I'm guessing I should go ahead and use the WC trans and rebuild the NWC, save it for later.

Thanks for all the info.
