Hey guys this is my second post on the site. I have a 88' XR7 I just bought it in March and I recently noticed my oil smells like gas. Someone told me to check the pcv but i can't find it anywhere on the valve covers. there is a small rubber hose going to the oil filler neck.? I don't know what its for. Its a 5.0 with no mods yet. and high milage. And I dont have the time or $$$ to do a rebuild. Any suggestions?

The PCV is located at the back of the intake manifold.  It's hard to see.  There is a metal filter underneath the valve, which some times gets plugged.  This can cause pressure to build in the crank case and blow out gaskets, resulting in a leaky mess.

Gas in the oil may more likely be a sticky fuel injector.  Fuel in the oil can be a bad thing.  It thins out the oil and can result in damaged bearings (due to lack of lubrication).  It was reason my car had a rod knock when I bought it for $600.

thanks! Would it be easier to take the intake manifold off? Or at least loosen it?

not worth it,

just figure out a way to reach in from the pass side and get it out.  your fingers will be your eyes, send someone with small hands in there, thats about all i can add.  No way in hell would i disturb all the parts required to be removed only to get at a 3 dollar part.

I think I got it. About how big would you say it is. my guess is about 1x1 circle in shape. Also would you recommend an oil change?

That sounds like it.

If the oil smell like gas you should change it.

The screen wasn't really clogged. Im thinking I may have an injector hanging open.

You might be able to use a mechanic's stethoscope to check the injectors (engine running).

I will assume the vehicle is running rich as its the most common way for fuel to get into the oil.

Pull the vacuum line from your fuel regulator (Silver can, mounted on the fuel rail right behind the EGR.)  While your at it, check the line for cracks or breaks.  Go cycle the ignition a few times without starting the car.  Is fuel spitting out of the vac connection?  If so, replace the reg.

If you have a stuck injector thats leaking bad enough, you should have a low speed stumble.  First way to check for a leaky injector is to get a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to the schrader valve behind the smog pump.  Cycle the key a few times and check the pressure.  It should hold pretty steady at 30psi (I think).  If its dropping pretty quickly, then you have a leak somewhere (flex line in tank, one way valve in pump, regulator, or leaky injector).  Try pulling each plug looking for a black, sooty electrode/ceramic.

If you have a low speed stumble, try doing the KOER "Dynamic Response" test (step 9, link http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=94).  It shuts off fuel and spark to each cyl looking for the one that causes the least change in rpm.  That might tell you the faulty injector.  Otherwise, you can remove one plug at a time until you find the one that has the least effect on the stumble. That cylinder is most likely your problem.  This test can shock the living hell out of you so be careful.  I usually avoid it at all costs.

My first thought was the fuel pressure regulator.
