FM Transmitters

This is not in relation to the Tbird which has its own direct input but for other vehicles - does anyone know of a FM transmitter that doesn't suck? An older one before all the regulations got put into place? Occasionally when driving down the street with my Transdock, I will be within 100 feet of someone and my sound completely goes away, switching to some crystal clear, loud transmission from a local car that goes away as we pass each other or stays as we both drive the same direction. Sometimes this is cars heading the opposite direction on the highway, sometimes this is worse on city streets but it IS coming from a vehicle. Perhaps this is just because they are broadcasting from somewhere outside of the vehicle and it is better hitting the external antenna. Either way, theirs sounds great.

Any idea on what these could be? Some cars I pass barely cause any static so I assume they are the newer regulated transmitters. I want to find out what these strong transmitters are and then watch the net for one for sale. Ideas?

This isn't a solution for cars that aren't mine...I'm stuck with transmitter only. I tried a highly rated modulator years ago and it was actually worse than the transmitter. This WAS on the factory radio in the Tbird though.

I can give you a schematic to build a "AM" tube transmitter that'll prob transmit 1/2 mile, but you'll need a long extension cord... LOL

the only one ive found was decent was one that was meant for an Ipod.

I happen to be fortunate enough to have an Aux. input on my faceplate of my CD player, so i trashed my shiznitty walmart transmitter..

See if you can locate one from an older Cd-changer setup. Those Add on type that were very common back in the early 90's. Those would control the changer but also most had RCA style inputs also so you could take the output from just about anything. Then They hooked inline between the antenna and the radio. It worked both ways. We would all tune into his station so we could all play the same song at the same time.

I have one of the FM Modulators, it works great, never thought it would backfeed out the antenna, did that really work?

As far as Plug in Transmitters go, the Monster Audio RadioPlay worked almost flawlessly across 3500 miles in 3 days. (Alabama to Oregon)

Yes it did work but we were limited on distance we could be from the other car.
