mass air wires

i bought a mass air conversion kit from pro-m and i see some differences in the directions. first off, it says i need to splice the red wire from the kit into a red wire coming out of pin 37 or 57. the problem is both 37 and 57 have a black wire with a think light gren stripe. and second, it says splice the black wire of the kit to a black wire coming from either 40 or 60, and both those are black with a thin dark green stripe.

a called pro-m and asked and they said this kit is for an 86-88 mustang and they cant really help me on another car. they did say red needs to be switched battery voltage and black is a chassis ground, but i'm not far enough into this project to hook the battery up.

is it safe to use those wires even though its not the colors instucted?

This is for your 88 Sport right? I did the conversion on my 88 LX and it had a red wire in pins 37 and 57. Pins 40 and 60 were black wires with a light green stripe IIRC. To be honest it doesn't really matter what color the wires are as long as you splice into the wires in the corect pins. Pins 37 and 57 have to be the power wires and pins 40 and 60 are grounds.

Do you still have the thermactor system on the car? I know it says to swap around the pins for it (which I did) but I don't have the thermactor/air pump system any more. I wonder if you have to do that if the system is gone.....

yes its the 88 sport. and no i dont have emmisions components.
i would think it would be ok seeings how the computer needs power and ground and it should be the same for both the stock and the mustang. its just really weird how the power side is so different in color. i'd hate to splice into it if its wrong and fry my ecm or my maf sensor. so i really wanna be sure about this. it's an early 88 model (december 87). is this an 87 carry over thing?

The 87 EVTM shows the wires on 37 and 57 black with yellow stripe.
They are hot (12v) with the EEC power relay picked.
Wires on 40 and 60 are black with light green stripe and go to ground.

ok, i guess it still uses the 87 wires. it looked like a light green stripe but i guess it must have been more "yellowy". ok so that means i should still follow the instructions given with the kit. thanks guys

Just so you know you don't need to run the wire for the fuel pump relay. I never ran it and have had no problems. The only thing it does is throw a code (95 I think) about the fuel pump relay. Also if your car doesn't have the VSS wires you need to run them or the car will have a tendency to run funny and stall. I have a very early 88 (Sep 87) build car and it has the VSS from the factory so you should be fine ;)

You know I just thought of something. My car was built before yours but the wires in pins 37&57 on mine are red. WTF?

Connect to the pin numbers listed & forget about the color, they change from car line to car line... Except for the tab & tad solenoids and the addition of the MAF connections, pin out is exactly the same...

yeah, that doesnt make much sense lol. how do i know if it has vss wires already? what pin? i really hope so, but with this car, it could go either way.

Also, some pre-1988 vehicles may need two additional wires run to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the transmission. Most people do not but if you find that your vehicle performs poorly or throws strange computer codes, you may have to run these wires. Positions: pin 6 to the O/Y VSS ground wire, and pin 3 to the DG/W VSS power wire.

If you are not running the air pump and related equipment, then it is NOT necessary to switch the pins for the Thermactor Air Diverter and Thermactor Air Bypass solenoids.  I have yet to have a CEL come on...and I didn't add the wire for the fuel pump relay either.

Good luck,
Don
