Lifter orientation and Rebuild q's.

5.0 Roller HO.
I am almost finished with my build and I have an odd questions.  Does it matter which way the lifter oiling hole points?  They are all brand new.

I installed them all facing the lifter valley.  It looks like it shouldn't matter.

Also, In my lower gasket kit, there is a large rubber ring that I don't recall from the teardown.  Its orangeish and about 4" in diameter or so.  Anyone know where that goes?

There are also 2 little plastic washers about the size of a quarter.  They appear to be nylon.  Any ideas?

The nylon washers should be oil drain plug gaskets...the large rubber ring you described sounds like the rear main seal.

As for the lifters, I've always put them in with the oil holes facing the valley...somebody else may have a little more insight into how important that may or may not be.

Good luck,
Don

The large 4 inch or smaller "o'ring" may be the seal for the timing cover.

I have the rear main and the timing cover seal.  I will take a picture of it tonight.  Its just a large rubber o-ring, not like a banded oil seal.  Its kinda similar to an oil filter o-ring but slightly larger.

I bet it's the rear main seal ;)

You really have confidence in my abilities.  :hick:

I found the box, and it turns out its a Oil Cooler Seal.  Go figure.

Seal, lifter (for reference), rear main.  Proof Im no idjit.

Would you guys advise putting a light RTV coating on my timing cover and wp gaskets?

Flat top pistons or notch?  Stock HO cam is .444 i think and I haven't heard of any problems with flat tops.  I just clayed my engine with a TFS1 cam (499/510), Windsor JR heads.  If it had flat tops it would probably have been close to the minimum acceptable clearance.

It all depends on your setup.  I think Vinny runs a E303 (498/498) cam on flat-tops and E7s without problems.
