Parts for exhaust

Ok guys I need to build a list of stuff I need to buy. I'm buying all parts and having a friend who works on mustangs in our area to put on my headers and h pipe.

Ok, So what all do I need.

Header Gaskets
header studs
studs that attach the headers to h pipe.

I've never done this before or know what to buy.
Any help would be appriciated.

EDIT:
forgot to mention
lincoln mark vii headers shorty
bbk h pipe
if that matters at all
NO CATS.

You should only need to have the pipes from the H-Pipe back to deal with. The headers have the studs for the H-Pipe to connect to.You'll need bolts for the headers, nuts for the s of the H-Pipe to connect to the headers, and you may need to lengthen your O2 harnesses.Easy stuff to deal with.Mine were to short because the O2 sensors were moved down a ways.Start with the headers, add the H-Pipe,then you'll see how you'll need to modify the rest of the exhaust. You can either weld the tailpipes to the H-Pipe or add s so you can remove parts.

you may have to bend or modify the shackle on the engine mount on the passenger side. i did. i just heated it and bent it down.

i lengthened the o2 harness by 14". you could buy a harness for that of new o2s for a mustang should already be the right length.

dont forget about the "smog tube". you will have to re attach it if you are not deleating the smog pump.

ok so thats what it is, the smog tube is the black type hose?
Makes sense, so add smog hose to the list...

I really think I'll be doing this myself unless my friend gives me a good price.

well, there should be a metal tube going from your current Y pipe up too the passengerside area of the ingine bay. you might be able to reuse your old one but most likely you will have to cut it at the y pipe and fit it somehow tto the one on the h pipe. if you punch the cats than i wouldnt even bother. id just pinch shut the ends. the h pipe that i got had its converters punched and the tube in question pinched shut. i didnt hook it up. instead i pulled off the tube and pinches shut the ones coming off from behind the heads. i then removed the air valves and hoses from the passenger side of the engine. i left the pump and the little vacume tubes tucked away. the pump will come off when i know for sure the car will run fine from taking the stuff off. everything seems fine so far. its not too bad to do by your self. a word of advice, id take a can of pb blaster and soak the  out of the manifold bolts a few times and let it soak over night. if you break one of those bolts its gonna be a pain in the a$$. also, i removed the starter to gain easier acsess to the header  bolts. none of it was too bad. the biggest problem i had was the tail pipes. the mustang pipes werent even close to fitting. the bends were all wrong. i almost got reducers after the lers and reused my stock pipes. you may have better luck with yours. everyone here says mustang pipes fit fine with a little lengthening. i had to cut and weld as well as lengthen and change some bends. its ugly but will work. im going to get some custom pipes bent up for the car this summer. i assume you are keeping the AOD. i have heard the linkage intefears with the h pipe but isnt much of an issue to deal with. i went with a t5 and everything cleared with room too spare.

well, that is what i did. ill have some pics soon. i wouldnt recomend it if you have state emissions. i live in massachusettes wich is probly the strictest next to callifornia. they put the car up on rollers simmilar to a dyno as part of the test. it measures exaust output with a load on the engine at various rpms. i am lucky enough to have a relitive that lives in NH. they registered the car for me there. there is only a visual and safety inspection there. knowing that i deleted the emissions stuff. i belive for the most part it is against the law to modify the factory emissions stuff in most stated. i kept it all too hook back up for the visual. as long as they see it there, it will pass. anyway, if you have too pass the sniffer test i suggest keeping the cats funtional. if not than go for it. keep in mind its not the GREEN friendly way to go about it.

sweet car BTW...

Ya here in pennsylvania only counties near harrisburgh, pittsburgh and philadelphia require sniffers.

I know 2 people who do state inspection. 1 of which painted my car.

Sorry to dig this back up, but i have to buy parts for my exhaust hookup in a week.

Now I went down to my local advanced auto parts. And the  kid there tried to sell me header bolts that were extremely small (length wise). didn't seem right.

Header Bolts- Anyone know the sizes on these?
Also need Header Gaskets- Any recommendations?

From headers connects to h pipe. I'm good with this connection w/ the parts.

This is where I'm not sure what I need to connect w/ my flowmasters.

I have 2.5" from cats to flows. Now I think I'll need to cut my 2.5" pipe between the cats and the flows, and attach that pipe to the hpipe.  I'm not welding any of this section between the headers and the flowmasters due to if i  have to get real functional cats.

SO this is my or the parts that I THINK I NEED. HELP IF IM MISSING ANYTHING.

header gaskets
put on headers
put on header bolts
attach H PIPE to Headers
h pipe connects to the punched out cats (to pass visual)
out cats connect to the flowmasters.

I think this is the correct order.
what are the pieces called that attach 2.5" to 2.5" w/o welding called? I'm drawing a blank, and can't for the life of me figure out what they are called. I'm going to need 2 of them to go from the hpipe to cats to lers.

I really wish I were able to figure out some stuff. Need alittle help. Sorry to be such a pain in the ass. But I'd rather know 100% then to mess around and guess and screw it up. Some of you guys have done this many many times, and know the ins and outs, I'm just starting, learning as I go.

below is a quick thing
1st image -NOW current setup
2nd image- what I believe it should look like.

is it right?

okay...first off ill tell you what i have. i had the stock sport exaust that was cast manifolds into a ypipe that had the converters, into another y pipe, lers and then tail pipes. im pretty sure thats what you have.

no i have tubeular shorty unequal length headers, to a foctory mustang h pipe cantaining 4 (punched out) cats, flow tubes, to flowmasters, to tail pipes.

sounds to me like you have some sort of make up h pipe and dummie cat. heres my advice to you. you should install the studs at the hpipe  first. install the headers (the bolts arent long at all btw). tighten those right down. (work from the center bolts outwards) make sure you check the clearance on the motor mounts. i have a feeling your gonna be doing a little cutting or heating and bending. no big deal. next assemble the h pipe/cats and hang it up to the headers but dont tighten anything. figure out how your gonna actually hang them if the hangar on the tranny mount doesnt work for you.

now, i dont know what you have for lers and tail pipes. if they are allready on the car then your cool. you should be able to measure the differance between the lers and the h pipe to figure out what you will have to make up. if the lers and tailpipes arent installed yet than thats your next step. i had to hack up the mustang tail pipes to make them work on my car. alot of people say they fit fine but you have to add a little length before and obviously behind them. not so in my case. it was a 2.5" setup and the bends were all wrong. i had to hack it up and weld to make it work. im going to have a shop make some nice pipes this spring...anyway get your tail pipes over the axles and loosly hung with the lers. make sure nothings going to rub and the suspension will clear when it moves around. with everything mocked up, measure the space between the h pipe assembly and the muflers. (note, their should be flow tubes just before the lers with some bends in them. id say 14" long or so. these are what you usually have to lengthen. they bolt to the hpipe with a cup  and can be lengthened with make up to the lers.) have someone make up the length and bends if it looks like you need them. mount them and start tighning everything from front to back checking clearance.

bleh...not sure if any of that made any sense, im frickin tired. i hope it was helpfull. good luck man.
