wide vs. narrow gas pedal?

My cougar is still out of commission while I get the dash stitched and the heater core replaced. :(  But in the meantime, I got a "wide" gas pedal from a Mark VII, the same one used on Mustangs.  My Cougar's pedal is about 1" narrower and I am thinking the wider one is better for heal/toe shifting after the stick shift conversion.

Thoughts? I know this is a bizarre question, but I still wanted to ask.

I've had both and have never really noticed a difference between them. However, I think your instincts are correct and would recommend the swap since it's pretty practical.

in the fox body(stang/fairmont/zepher)
the wide one for automatic cars.
the narrow one for stick cars!(thats how ford made room for the 3 pedal)
remember it easier to fix them, than to find them after they been crushed.

No, I have the wide one in my 1987 Mustang GT 5-spd and the narrow one in my 1988 Cougar AOD. And I have the wide one in my 1986 Lincoln Mark VII AOD parts car.

There is no logic as to which car got what, from what I've seen.

Yeah, I don't see a big difference between them, but I'm gonna try out the one on the Mustang more just to see for myself. Thanks once again for the confirmation, Eric!

I have a wide gas pedal in the LSC, and a spare thin one from the Mustang I got the manual pedals out of. I don't feel like it makes any nevermind which you have, but if you want to they're easy to change.

All automatic Cougars and Thunderbirds from 1983-88 had the skinny pedal from the factory. There was NEVER a wide one in an automatic Cougar or T-Bird and I have never found any evidence to contradict that. The 5-speed cars should have had the wider one from the factory. I know the 1987-88 Turbo Coupe does; the earlier cars should have had them also. We need some factory 5-speed owners to confirm that (all the pedals are airbrushed out in the dealership brochures).

I replaced the skinny pedal in the convertible with a wide one from a Mustang (actually, a Bullitt pedal). That's how I've had experience with both. My foot didn't really seem to prefer either one, and the connection to my brain yielded no discernable difference between the two kinds. However, the Bullitt pedal looks way cooler. ;)

Uhmmm, no.  I would know, mostly because I'm the original owner of both cars...

...plus its unlikely the dealer switched pedals without charging myself or FoMoCo for their effort.

I think you might be confused.  He's talking about the gas pedal and not the brake pedal.

All manual Foxes (except the SVO) got the narrow brake pedal and the autos got the wider one.

Is this what you're thinking of?

I never paid attention to the gas pedals myself.  I just swapped in an auto(wide) brake pedal into my '83(manual).

I have never seen any other gas pedal other than the narrow style on the stick / auto in a bird or coug 83-88

I think ranchernut needs to post a pic of that 86 TC wide gas pedal.
