Rotor/Cap contact

Alright, did my tune up (minus wires) today.

Plugs were all gray/white and dry. I thought there might be some fouled up ones the way it has been running.

Pulled cap up and this is what I see.

Rotor melted down and wore a ring in the cap.

New cap and rotor are also making contact.

I have a dizzy from an '86 GT in the car now, thought the parts might not be the same. Looked up the part numbers for both cars and they are the same.

What should I do? I dont think I have the receipt but the guy at ORiellys knows me since I always go to them for parts first.

If I was to trim down the rotor would it effect anything?

what you propose could work but likely will not,, your just barking up the wrong tree with the blame of what went wrong.

you have too much up and down play on your distributor shaft.

you wont be able to see what i mean unless you pull the dizzy and check.  view the dizzy , from the bottom up you have the gear fit on with a roll pin. Next going up the dizzy shaft is a collar that is fit with a roll pin as well.  that collar or the bottom of the dizzy housing has excessive wear.

the problem with what you propose is tha tthe rotor will continue to cut into the dizzy cap,, so this is why i say it wont actually work, although I like the way you thihk.

If you want to rig it up with little or no parts,, I would add an Oring around the dizzy where the cap sits.  Now put the cap on and the oring will take up about 1/8''.  that should be enough to get your rotor button off the dizzy cap post contacts.
A fuel pump o ring might be the right size.

shave off the bottom of a "new" rotor button so it sits deeper into the dizzy ....that will work better.

the lower collar can be removed (after the gear is taken off) and a thin stainless washer can be installed between the collar and the dizzy base. 

look at it like this,, new dizzy will cost more than a washer / shim.  You have to remove it any way.  I consider the dizzy as still good if there is no side to side play.  up and down is common but ill bet you have 1/8'' or more of play. 

no, not new dizzy time yet. fix what you have, invest the rest in a scott trade account and buy some 3 cent stuff with the money that would have went to a dizzy.
