I dont get it.

Hello everyone, as im sure you see im new to this site and i like it set up alot more than most of the other bird/cougar sites and thought i might ask for some help.  Well i recently sold my car to go buy the 87 turbo coupe ive always wanted sense i was little.  Well i found what seemed like was the greatest canidate on earth, a light blue 1987 thunderbird turbo coupe, with a flawless interior and exterior, and it only had 90k on it!  Well everything was grand and peachy until it touched my driveway.  Now it been an uphill battle with this thing to even stay on,  Now this will all just be a big huge jumbo sentance with all its been doing so sorry.  One, after you start it the car idles rough then smooths out, two the car has absolutly no power it seems past 2500rpm.  Its an auto btw and when you hold it in first and run it to 5k and let off it dies.  The cat is not clogged either, i had that checked and we had a new exhaust put on it. Also i know the turbo is suppost to run about 10psi stockm and mine willnot bypass 5 psi, and when im on it i can hear what sounds like the sound and airbrush nakes in the engine bay, idk if it supost to do that or not.  I have no idea, im not famiolair with these but im really aggravated because ive always wanted one but now i dont know if i wanna keep it.:bangtbird:

I dont get it.

First, let me tell you what the meaning of life is.  When you're driving your Bird through a corner at approximately x2 the speed limit, and the tail starts to drift out just a hair, that thrill that runs up your spine and then comes back down to carefully squeeze the throttle a little bit more .. you're getting close.

As for your problem, these motors are a bit finicky so make sure the little things are all good, TPS, VAM, PCV, plugs, wires and the rest of the electrical.  Run codes, and make sure the fuel system is in good shape.  There's more, but I'm in the middle of working on mine, so maybe others will step in with more info.

BTW, You definitely don't want to keep it.  You definitely want to give it to me.

Well im thinking about a rebuild, with my price at the parts store the master kit would be only 320$ and me and some friends can rebuild it. But i would like to know if it is not the motor so i dont waste my 320 dollars.  Ive checked alot of the sensors and everything checked out except for the knock sensor, and i tink the iac is going on it, but its doing ok other wise. i guess its still not right.

At 90K, that motor is barely broken in, UNLESS, a previous owner completely fubar'd the motor.

You could easily spend that $320 doing little things but odds are you won't need to spend that much.  Give it a good tune-up using Motorcraft parts unless someone here or on TF gives you an acceptable alternative.  Don't believe the parts guys when they say x-brand parts are good enough.

Read this, do this, then come back with more questions.

1.One, after you start it the car idles rough then smooths out,

2. the car has absolutly no power it seems past 2500rpm.
3. Its an auto btw and when you hold it in first and run it to 5k and let off it dies.
4. The cat is not clogged either, i had that checked and we had a new exhaust put on it.
5. Also i know the turbo is suppost to run about 10psi stockm and mine willnot bypass 5 psi, and when im on it i can hear what sounds like the sound and airbrush nakes in the engine bay, idk if it supost to do that or not.

1 sounds like you need to pull the IAC(idle air control) and clean it out. Soak it in carb cleaner and let it sit. Then blast it out and shake it so all the carb cleaner comes out.
2. Have you checked the timing? Pull the spout connector and make sure the timing is set correctly.
3.That sounds like a VAC leak, or the IAC is dirty and hangs
4. I had a new exhaust and cat installed and 2yrs later it was plugged.  So you never know, drop the down pipe and go fro a spin. Power back exhaust is the problem.
5. Once again timing and check to see if all vac lines are good and that maybe the BCS is unhooked or not working. Oh and your turbo should sound like a big sucking sound kinda like and airbursh.  What you don't want is any metallic sounds.

Don't forget to keep your head up. These 2.3t's are durable I've pulled apart many of them with @100,000 miles and all of them I could still see hone marks in the block.

Now Ted those are just song lyrics that we used to pass us into Heaven. Don't get that confused with the real meaning of life. Although that doesn't seem to far off.
