head gasket or intake gasket....turbo?

-ok engine guys.....my "new" '83 TC i just purchased has got a problem...so it seems.....when u first start it up, it emits a "white" smoke out of the tail pipe and it has a STRONG coolant smell to it.  now once the engine and exhaust warm, the smoke goes away, and most of the smell does, but it is still there....there is NO evidence of coolant in the oil.  the heater core has been by passed so it is not there to be a suspect and the turbo is practically new on it.  so do u think a head gasket is going, or could there be a bad lower intake gasket letting it come into the system and hence the smoke/smell??? any thoughts or opinions????  ideas????
thanks in advance.....

spray carb cleaner around #2 and #3 cylinder. if idle changes, then you have a bad intake gasket. if not, then i would think the head gasket is bad.

Possible HG I suppose.  Kind of odd.

Is the turbo water-cooled on that?  I can't really tell from the pic, but it shouldn't be.  I know my '84 XR-7 was not, so that shouldn't be it if you are smelling coolant.

Worse case you buy the Fel-Pro HG (not the 1035...no need) an intake gasket and a Ranger VC gasket and swap it out.  You can even reuse your stock bolts if they are the 12-point ones.

You might as well replace the valve stem seals as well as that could be part of the smoke on start-up (I know you said white...but it doesn't take long for those things to go bad.)

-thanks chuck....yeah, i believe u r correct on the turbo....too much time playing with the '87-'88s....so u think(which deep down i know it is) the head gasket, even though there is no evidence of coolant in the oil??? i am assUme..ing it must be bad closer to the inside around the piston and just leaking into the comustion chamber???  my diagnosis....

It's possible.  They have been known to blow and not mix oil/coolant.
Could just be an age thing as I'm sure it has not been beat on much.

I wanna see this HG...

Seems if coolant was getting into a cylinder, the compression would be in the water jackets and it would be pushing coolant out the overflow... There is probably 500 times more cylinder pressure than coolant pressure...

x2 on the possible cracked head.
I agree you should see coolant gushing out the reservoir.
When my SC blew the HGs it was similar to what your describing, but the white smoke decreased as it got warm but never really went away.  I didn't get too much coolant pumping out the reservoir but I did have some engine oil in there.
