Transmission Codes

Alright. I am trying to figure out exactly which transmissions are the same in 1987 and 1988 between the tc, v6, and v8.

All tranny codes read from the door jam sticker are different.

My 1987 v8 has a tranny code of T55kk

My 1988 v6 has a tranny code of TCCDD or maybe its TCCOD (its smudged a little and I can't be certain).

Anyone know what these codes mean?

Now I have been told that the v6 and v8 transmissions are the same. But I read in a few places Ford used the A4LD (automatic turbo coupe transmissions) in many 4 cyl and 6 cyl applications. It was a light duty transmission. My thought was if its compatibile with a 6 cyl engine, would they have used it in the 6 cyl thunderbird? Is that why the v8 engine is only 150 hp, becuase all the automatic transmissions are the same throughout the models? I know hte mustangs have a different 5.0l with 225 hp. Just a question I came up with.

If anyone knows anything that could shed some light on my mystery, please let me know.

ONLY the first digit is the tranny code... The other four are spring codes...I believe fronts then rears...

No 3.8 ever used a A4LD... only Aerostars and Rangers with 3.0 AFIK...

The V6 AOD's are built with less clutches and a smaller O/D servo... So even though it is a AOD, it isn't the same as a V8 version... There are some differences in the Bird 5.0 and Stang AOD as well... Super Coupe(what I'm running)and pickup AOD were built the strongest...

i just thought id chime in and say the a4ld was used on 4 cyls and ranger 3.0 and 4.0's maybe a couple other uses as well. as far as trans for 87-88 tbird/cougars it was all AOD unless turbocoupe so turbocoupe50 would have your answers

A4ld Was the trans in a turbo coupe and its not a very good trans.
