Q's about bushings and related area...97 Coug, 3.8

Ok, so we got the tires changed Friday and the guy said there was "play in the wheels", however didn't say what kind, or what wheel for that matter.
Anyway, went and got the cam synchronizer and position sensor put in today.  The guy there said the bushings are really bad on it, to the point that when you move the car, the whole tire moves forward and back....

What I want to know is... he said it would be about $500 for him to fix it. Both sides need done. Is that a good price and if not, what should we expect it to cost?

Is this something Roger and the boys could do on the weekend? (We have the manual for it).

I just want to be sure the guy isn't trying to screw us, as I think he already did with doing the Taurus brakes.

The bushings in your MN12 are simple repairs. They are located at the end of what Ford calls "Tension struts" in MN12's (and Radius Arms in older F-150's). He'll have to jack the car up and let the front suspension hang, and undo the large nut on the end of the tension strut (he will likely require a breaker bar to do so, it'll be TIGHT).

Here's a pic of the part you need (arrow pointing toward bushing):
