I've read that the Ford 3.8 is more similar in design to the Buick 3.8 than it is to the Ford Windsor engines... Quote Selected

Would have been too easy to follow Chevrolet's(and Buick) lead and design the 3.8 after a existing V8 engine...Bore spacing 4.193 vs 4.380 for the Windsors...Deck height 9.232 vs 8.206(5.0) or 9.503(5.The dimensions for all Ford engines from the FE up, are in the Ford Racing catalogs... At that time they were known just as "small blocks"... Only when the 351 Cleveland was introduced was it necessary to have a distinction between the two 351s...
