Advancing the timing on the 3.8

Just wondering but has anyone here advanced the timing on their 3.8 over the factory 10* BTDC? I'm just wondering if the 3.8 in my 95 would like that or not. Since the 3.8 in my 95 is similar to the 88 3.8 I was wondering if any of you 88 V6 guys had done it. I know 5.0s (like the one in my 88) respond well to a timing advance up to 14* or more.


BTW I know how to advance timing and listen for ping and such. All the guys over at tccoa tell me how to do is advance the timing....... http://forums.tccoa.com/showthread.php?t=108382

I advanced my 87 3.8L to 14* and ran premium fuel for a few weeks.
It's Gumby's fault.

I ran mine at 14* without premium fuel for years :hick:

You might consider finding an aftermaket chip/computer for it.
I ran one in my '96 for a few months back in '05. It altered a few things, including shift points, timing, etc.
The car would burn the tires off if you stomped it from a stand-still, and it got sideways during the 1-2 shift at WOT. Of course, I removed the lower spring in the 1-2 shift acspoogeulator which had already firmed up the shift, so it was kind of a double-whammy.
It felt so much faster over stock, but I eventually removed it because it was too much. Driving it in the rain was really annoying.

However, it may be exactly what you're looking for with the 3.8.

In the mean time, I strongly suggest you install a transmission cooler and upgrade the shift acspoogeulator pistons in your 4R70W.

I have my doubts about a chip making the 3.8 run that good lol:hick:

I the mean time I might try the trans cooler and mods. It might help with the shifting. I swear the AOD in my 88 respond to changes in throttle position better than the 4R70W in the 95. I have a feeling that is caused more by the engine in the 88 than the AOD being a better trans;) . In reality I would love to put a 4R70W behind the 5.0 in the 88 if it wasn't so  expensive to do so......

How do you plan to advance the timing on your 95 3.8, isnt that DIS?

Nope they had a distributor up till 95. 96 and up have DIS.

Plus I had to replace the stator on the distributor so I know it has one lol :hick:

like everone else,, i ran mine a little high to,.  The eec advances even further as you already know.
