Please don't shoot me... October 19, 2007, 04:50:12 AM Hey all, not sure this is the right forum or not, I've been lurkin around the board for awhile & thought I'd pop on in, I was recomended to come here from Foureyedpride.com.Anyway, I have an '82 MustangGT that i've been restoring for some time, and awhile back I had an '88 5.0bird dropped in my lap. The interior is totally thrashed, dash is guttedm brake lines have been cut, and no title..oh. & it looks like someone tried to use spraypaint for starter fluid..BUT!!, the motor purrs like a kitten..well, ok it purrs like a pissed-off mountain lion, it's obviously got a differant cam in it & I was told gt40 heads, tho I don't know if I believe that one. :burnout: So my question.. to you all is...(please don't hurt me) what can I use off of this car to put on a fox-stang? I am actually looking at doing an engine swap & puttung a 4bbl on it in place of the Fi, now I know it's not an HO motor, but even stock, I am sure it would be an improvement over an '82 HO..any thoughts, opinions/suggestions?:hick: Quote Selected
Please don't shoot me... Reply #1 – October 19, 2007, 09:49:05 AM There’s a good chance the bird 5.0 is a roller motor and the trany is AOD. Both cars are fox’s. So you can eat a lot off it. Personally I’m not mad at you junk is junk at least some of it will live on though id rather see you build a fox bird or cougar. Mustangs to me are ME-TOO cars(82’is ok though). As for the gt40 heads maybe it was rebuilt w/them they are vastly available at JY of 96&up explorer and mountaineers if they are you should see GT or GTP on the corner of the head very visible under the valve cover. Please don't shoot me... Reply #8 – November 17, 2007, 07:43:30 PM that motor looks like a bolt has never been turned on it. i would bet its a factory stock motor. and those are 14lbs injectors(stock for v8 t-birds). Quote Selected
Please don't shoot me... Reply #9 – November 18, 2007, 01:29:33 AM If my info is correct, the stock 1982 5.0 HO motor is a 2-bbl engine with:160 HP @ 4200 RPM247 FT-LBS @ 2400 RPMSo, while going with a bone-stock 5.0 motor from an 88 T-bird will lose some horsepower (if you had a single-tailpipe exhaust system), you'll gain a notable amount of torque. Rating is, from what I've been able to dig up:Single exhaust:150 hp @ 3400 RPM (some sources say @ 3200?)270 ft-lbs @ 2000 RPMFaux-dual (the stock 2 small cats into 1 big cat into 2 lers and tailpipes in the Fox Tbirds/Cougars):155 hp @ 3400 RPM265 ft-lbs @ 2200 RPMTrue dual (as found in the Crown Vic and Grand Marquis, using the stock non-HO manifolds)160 hp @ 3400 RPM280 ft-lbs @ 2200 RPMWith headers, probably even a touch more horsepower, but stay conservative on the headers with such a tame motor. So, not even touching the motor itself, just in exhaust configuration, you could likely regain the horsepower you lost, and then some. Torque production will be superior any which way you cut it.This of course assumes you keep the whole SEFI setup.Since you've got the whole car, computer, engine, etc., why not swap the whole thing over, including the fuel-injection system? It's gonna be a little more work, true, but it's something to consider. Quote Selected
Please don't shoot me... Reply #10 – November 18, 2007, 02:46:27 AM Thanks for the info, like I said the guy I got it froms claims it already had some goodies in it, either way it didnt cost me anything but the gas to trailor it. & thanks for the info King, one thing I was considering was putting a new cam while I have it out... but I figure the HP issue wont be too far off, according to a cpl Stang sites the '82 was rated at 157hp & 240lb.. so it's close anyway... but I am planning on puttin ' a 4bbl onto the t-bird...I just like the sound/feel of a carbed set-up... Please don't shoot me... Reply #11 – November 18, 2007, 07:20:02 AM stock 88 bird had the E6 motor very simpler as the 86 50 ho in the stang.so do you research before you mod Quote Selected
Please don't shoot me... Reply #12 – November 18, 2007, 08:59:11 AM The biggest issue with modifying the Standard Output engine is the flat top pistons. Unless you use Twisted Wedge heads, you're stuck with almost only the factory HO cam. You can throw some E7TE heads on it, some roller rockers, and some other bolt ons, and it will be a bit more powerful than a stock mustang engine, but you're pretty much stuck at that point. Please don't shoot me... Reply #14 – November 19, 2007, 03:18:44 PM Well, "best" really depends on parts-on-hand and any limits the budget may have as well. Then again, I'm a cheap SOB, so take what I say with a boulder of salt. Quote Selected
