No Heat??

I am having a problem with the Cougar it gets little to no heat. Engine warms up just fine and stays in the middle of the gauge.. havent checked the thermosat yet but my question if the heater core is bad dont it leak??? Mines not also on the heater panel ( Didnt know what else to call it) The slider lever dont go all the way to the heat side. i have it held there with a rubber band over to the rear defrost switch. My question the lever not going all the way over will it cause no heat to come out??

heater cores can clog up also. that may be why you dont have heat. your selector not going all the way to heat might be a cause also, sounds kinda screwy...

Does the fan blow hard? IE: Is there lots of air, just not hot?
Are both hoses going to the heater core hot?
Are the hoses even hooked up?

Yes the fan does blow hard just no hot air...
Yes the hoses are hooked up
I have not checked the hoses I will do that later when I get out and see if both hoses are hot....

i'm having the same problem with mine, but my heat selector works fine.... i felt the hoses when looking at it and one was hot, the other just warm.... clogged core for me... oh boy :).....  that's a sure way to check (i get moderate heat, so i'm in NO rush to fix it).....  also, the selector hooks to the temperature blend door.... if it is binding (meaning it won't stay all the way to one side or the other by itself) the door will still let the cold air in with the hot, even if you force it there..... either way, you'll have to get into the box to find out... best is to check those hoses first

did you check the little vacuumm hoses under the dash to see if they are hooked up?

1 hot hose. 1 warm hose. bad flow
I'd flush out the heater core first. It probably needs it anyway ---forward and backward.

most of my older fords had a heater core blocking problem.

Get 2 flush kits and clamp off the hoses so the kits flow only through the heater core. than flush away. you'd me amazed what will come out.

I had a 78 merc.and a 88 e 250 that used to need it every fall.
Probably from never flushing the entire system ever.
sludge and gunk seem to acspoogeulate there for some reason. I guess from heat and rubber hoses breaking down or the heater core deteriorates inside.
I think mostly people put rad. stop leak in it somewhere along the way to fix a problem.

An old friend that worked in a pit crew showed me a lot of useful
ford problem fixes. transmission filter is another common problem in older fords too. never had one with my aod's though

The flapper problem i also had too if it's open just a crack you wont get heat either. i used to force it closed with a coat hanger to keep pressure on it. than prop the hanger against something every winter. I guess finding a flapper would be the easier fix though. lol

another big problem could be leaking head gasket. not enough pressure to keep the engine heat. if you start with heat than it goes away. most likely head gasket or possibly rad cap gasket. also fluid would be missing slowly but no visible leaks---I hope it's not that one---

Looks like you have heat to the heater core.
You need to be figuring out why the temperature selector on the dash is not working.

The temperature selector operates the "blend" door which controls how much air goes through the heater core and how much bypasses it.
The door is operated by a cable.

all fluid is up to level?
There's a possibility of an air bubble being in the heater hose also.
make sure the car is cool. open the rad. cap. squeeze the upper hose a little and see if you get air bubbles or the level just rises.
when i fill my rad i usually keep the cap off when the car is running.
the therm. will usually open and suck more antifreeze. so i fill it up until it starts to try to overflow than i cap it.

sometimes if theres an air bubble the hoses just get hot from the engine heat

you can also try to squeeze the the upper hose when filling it while its running to get air out. ---Please be very careful when doing this while its running.------
we don't want any accidents for the holidays-----antifreeze can also fly off a moving belt and get in your eyes------

replace the therm. when you check it they get gunked too

if everything is flowing to and from the heater. the next step is the controls as was posted  in #2 or #3 i think.
hydro hoses are connected and not cracked and leaking. the flapper door is opening and closing all the way. you don't have a hole in the firewall. things you may have not noticed
