Help! The "Coug" needs a tranny! July 16, 2007, 03:14:35 PM Well, I just had an "ugrade" done to the engine in my Cougar. The engine turned out sweet, but the transmission doesn't like the new found power (i.e. it slips and causes a lose of power to the rear wheels). You can really tell that the engine has a bunch of power just by listening to it and when the transmission decides to co-operate for a second or two. Now to my question... What's easier? Finding a strong automatic to put in it, or do a 5-speed swap? I'm sure I'll be happy with either. I just thought I'd get a few responses from you guys first just too see what you guys think would be easier for me. I also wonder about the whole 5-speed conversion. In order to get a clutch pedal for it, does it HAVE to come out of another Cougar or Thunderbird? Or could one from an 80's Mustang work? Plus, I've never dealt with a manual before. I think it would be neat, but I just wonder if it's worth the hassle. Quote Selected
Help! The "Coug" needs a tranny! Reply #1 – July 16, 2007, 03:41:44 PM Any Fox pedal assy will work. You just won't want the 87-88 TC as they are hydraulic. The rest are cable-actuated. Quote Selected
Help! The "Coug" needs a tranny! Reply #2 – July 16, 2007, 03:59:15 PM I have pedals in my 88 out of an 86 mustang GT. They all work, though sn95 pedals will not work.I would go through with the 5 speed, its different driving a car that has power than a Hyundia. Much less shifting. Quote Selected

Help! The "Coug" needs a tranny! Reply #5 – October 01, 2007, 09:11:47 PM no you dont have to pull the dash, though it is easier. It is really easy if you have an air ratchet like I do, I did the swap to my '88 tbird in a day, and my '88 XR-7 is getting the same done to it this weekend.... BEST thing I ever did. These cars are fun with 5 speeds and HO's.SO um....... you going to keep us in the dark about the upgrades or what?!?!? WHATCHA do to it???? Quote Selected
Help! The "Coug" needs a tranny! Reply #6 – October 01, 2007, 10:42:14 PM I say go for the manual swap. I hate automatic transmissions. If it was easy to swap a 5-speed into my daily driver MN12, I would have done it already.Do you have a console and all of the other goodies? If not, it's about time to upgrade the interior to match up with the upcoming floor shifter. Quote Selected
