I get too wordy trying to be thorough.
Parts wise you are down to the switch assembly, the light sensor and the purple wire in between.

Unplug the 6 wire connector on the switch.
With your OHM meter check for continuity between the contact on the switch where the purple wire goes and the contact where the black ground wire goes.
Switch on continuity. Switch off no continuity.

2 words... light switch.

It could be a faulty light switch the autolamps could be shorted out at the switch.

I have a meter.  I CAN do electrical stuff, but you guys put me to shame.  Seems I am always researching when I do this kind of stuff.  Engine and fuel injection stuff comes to me much more naturally.  I'll be back with an update.

Digging ever deeper......

Pulling one relay at a time does not change or make the problem go away.  Neither does pulling BOTH relays...... I hooked them back up.


Hmmmm, Okay....Leaving the autolamp/autodim switch unhooked makes both systems inoperative.  Okay.....Time to pull the main headlamp switch.

Pulling the switch out I notice there are 2 connectors.  One large one with 8 wires and a second smaller one with one single orange wire that goes to the autolamp/autodim harness.  Disconnecting this single wire disables the autolamp.

It would seem the culprit is either this wire or the main headlamp switch then......So to check this wire I would check between it and the black wire on the autolamp connector, is this correct?

*edit*  The orange wire goes in the bottom left pin as seen in the picture below of the main headlamp switch.

The orange with white stripe wire you pulled off the main light switch is, hot at all times +12volts to the autolamp relay #1 and the autolamp light sensor.
There is nothing wrong with your main light switch. But pulling off the orange wire which provides power to the autolamp feature looks like a way to cripple the feature if that is what you want.

The two thumb wheel gizmo with the 6 pin connector on it is the one you need to be looking at. If you want to try to fix this thing.

I don't have one of these to look at but I assume(dangerous thing to do) moving the thumb wheel to the end operates the on/off switch.
With your OHM meter check between the connectors that the P/O and BK wires go to. If you can read the pin numbers in the socket they are 4 and 6.
Operate the autolamp thumb wheel on/off and see if the circuit opens and closes.

Okay, apparently I've done something real weird to the switch.

My continuity test of the switch gave all strange results, as if on when off and off when on at the lowest setting......

I hooked it and everything else back up for now just to see something.  Headlight switch off, black glove over light sensor, autolamp switch in off position.  I turn the key.  Headlights.  I move the autolamp switch to "ON".  Lights go out.  I cycle through the entire range of the "on position and the headlights only illuminate at "MAX".  So now they are officially only on in "OFF" and "MAX" while everywhere else they are off with the light sensor in total darkness.  Seems I need me a new Autodim/autolamp switch.....I guess that makes this one SOLVED.

BTW -- The switch is Ford part #E4LB-13C105-AB for anyone who may need to know in the future.  Attached are some pictures of the switch.  Also if anyone has a spare laying around they're willing to part with, please let me know.;)

It almost sounds like the connector is plugged in upside down.

Recheck the switch with your meter using this diagram.

The connector only fits one way....

I will re-check.  This would be a lot easier if I could find my EVTM disk Scott sent me.  We moved the computer/office to the basp00get and it's one of 3 disks that have disappeared into the nether-realm, LOL.
