Dash Lights Don't Work

Well I installed my new stereo and now the dashlights don't work. It's strange though, I have a digital dash and when I turn the key on all the gauges light up. But when I turn the headlight switch on the dash goes black. Also the clock and temperature indicator on the climate control dim. As soon as I turn the headlights off the dash illuminates again. I tried disconnecting the stereo completely and it still does it. I have checked the fuses that I was told were related, all were fine. I don't have the cover for my fuses so I am unable to identify what each fuse is. I am clueless as to what could be doing this. A friend told me that if I didn't hook up the dimmer wire to the new deck it would cause this, but that doesn't make sense to me since it does it when the deck and harness is removed.

Sounds to me like the dimmer wire on the car end it shorting out on something. If you didn't hook up the dimmer to the radio it isn't a bad thing the light just won't dim with the head lights, And some radios the button lights won't light up without the dimmer wire hooked up.

I am not sure where to start looking to fix this issue. I disconnected the stereo and the problem is still there. I don't have the cap to my fuse box so I can't trace the fuses. Where should I start to find this issue? It seems like it is the dimmer that is messed up.
