motor mount replacement July 24, 2007, 06:12:08 AM I am pretty sure the drivers side motor mount on my 86 cougar is broke. as in forward gear when accelerating hard and letting off the gas quick i get a nice clunk from the front. U-joints are good. it does not do this in reverse so I am pretty sure its drivers side motor mount. Any idea how hard it would be to change the motor mount WITH the motor in the car? i know id have to raise the motor up some. This is a 3.8/c5 car. Eric Quote Selected
motor mount replacement Reply #1 – July 24, 2007, 01:32:15 PM Did it a while ago. Not bad at all. I have a 5.0, but should be the same. You just need a bottle jack and something to go between that and the pan. Simple job, but a extra pair of hands helps a little. What mounts are you going to get? Quote Selected

motor mount replacement Reply #4 – July 25, 2007, 09:07:58 AM thank you... i just looked at the replacement mounts. 34$ a side or i could get a pair of solids for 28$....tempting...but too much trouble id think in due of vibrations, stress on chassis and components... so hydraulic mounts ill get. motor mount replacement Reply #5 – August 01, 2007, 05:36:36 AM alright im picking up my driver side engine mount in a few hours and will be instaling it friday morning. anything i need to know going into this? i figure ill jack the car up and remove wheel and place on jack stand. then take jack and block of wood and jack motor up on oil pan to releive pressure and unbolt the mount as a unit and pull it out and replace the isolator and reinstall? motor mount replacement Reply #6 – August 01, 2007, 09:27:03 AM Don't jack up the oil pan. Put the block of wood under the crank pulley. I did both my motor mounts on my 88 3.8 in one shot. Got rid of my clutch chatter :) Quote Selected

motor mount replacement Reply #8 – August 11, 2007, 05:50:54 PM I ran into this SAME problem with my '86 when it had only 13000 miles on it, of course, about 1000 past the 12/12 warranty on anything outside the block. Whodathunk a 3.8 CFI engine would have the torque to do that to a mount? The replacement mount has an exterior mechanical stop on it. If the car still has the original mount, you're gonna need the bracket that bolts to the block too. It's relieved for the added stop. This should obviously have been a callback/warranty issue, but Ford wiggled outta that one. Best way to tell, is look at the mount from the top of the car. If you don't see a metal tab sticking out off the top of the mount through a metal bracket that comes up from the bottom of the mount, that's the original mount. I found this out the hard way, when replacement mounts for these cars were still up around the $100 range from the stealerships. I have some photos of the original mount and the replacement from when I did it back in 1988. If I can find them I'll load 'em. Good luck with the work. Quote Selected
