Get Some Popcorn This One Is Long... July 11, 2007, 05:45:32 PM [/COLOR]I just got my 87 5.0 on the road (had to replace tranny), anyway while I was doing the tranny work I decided to install some guages. I put the OIL PRESSURE guage in place of the OEM temp sensor near the oil filter and the H2O temp in place of the OEM sensor near the distributor.Questions: 1- Where/how can I install another guage for OIL TEMP. I am putting a T-fitting in for the OEM TEMP sensor but would like a guage also.2- OIL PRESSURE guage reads about 40 psi when I start it, but after about five minites of running it drops to 5 psi or lower. Engine was flushed and oil changed with new filter. Used Valvoline Syn Tech 10w-40 and Fram Tough guard filter. Is the oil pump going? Oil comes up to about 20 psi when accelerating/driving.3- Coolant temp runs at 190 - 195. Is this about right? Thermostat appears to open @ 190.4- Ran my scanner and got a low voltage on the barometric sensor. Replaced it and it cleared just fine. Engine does not smoke (pipes or filler neck), miss or run rough at idle or under normal driving. If I try to accelerate hard it bogs down and wants to die. If I am in Park or Neutral and rev the engine it stumbles and when it hits about 4000 RPMs wants to die. Timing set at 10 degrees. New Motorcraft plugs, MSD Distributor cap & rotor, Accel wires.5- Tranny seems O.K. I set the T.V. with a feeler guage according to the Haynes manual I have. Shifts smooth @ 28 to 32 MPH and 48 to 50 MPH for O/D. Feel just a little shudder during acceleration but very minimal. Installing guages for T.V. Pressure and Tranny temp along with Tranny cooler tomorrow.6- Other things I have done while the tranny was out include new Air Filter sprayed with oil, disassembled & cleaned T/B, EGR spacer & air intake ducting. New gaskets for T/B, EGR, Upper Plenum. Replaced all vac lines for T/B & Plenum. Replaced Valve cover gaskets. No visible/audile fluid/Vac leaks. Removed/flushed radiator and overflow. I picked up a fuel filter and I hope this corrects the stumble but I feel like I am missing something. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated, Need to ride to the drag strip Friday and Saturday! Thanks in advance!:birdsmily: Quote Selected
Get Some Popcorn This One Is Long... Reply #1 – July 11, 2007, 06:51:32 PM Bearings are probably shot, is why the OP is falling when hot... For the stumble you need to check the fuel pressure under acceleration, weak fuel pump is a common problem...So you going to Northeast Sat??? I should be there, if it ain't too ed hot... Not sure what the rain will do. Will probably go down Saturday to... Do you race? I noticed two Birds both 87/88. I want to finish my Pinto Wagon to run down there. Have my eye on a Vega that I would love to run. Maybe we can meet if you go, let me know.BTW Thanks for the comments... Gives me some things to keep me busy. Bearings and fuel pump. It is never easy.Looking forward to meeting... Quote Selected

Get Some Popcorn This One Is Long... Reply #7 – July 12, 2007, 05:44:40 PM O.K. O.K. Yeah pressure sensor... U got me. Now for some important stuff.Replaced the fuel filter - stumble got a little better. Adjusted TPS to .99 Volts - stumbled a little less. Now I guess I need a fuel pump.Is a stock pump the way to go here? Is there any way to install a pump external to the tank? Not doing this until next week.I also have an 88 Sport. I was swapping some tires and noticed a shock type traction bar???? bolted to the frame near the gas tank and attached to a bracket that is welded to the axle. Is this an OEM upgrade or an aftermarket item? Cant find it listed anywhere. Also I know I saw an axle code chart somewhere but can't find it. My 87 has an axle code "M" and the 88 has an "8". I spun both axles and the 87 ratio was +/- 2:00 ??? the 88 is +/- 3:00 ???. If anyone has this info handy I would appreciate it.Hope I got all that correct..... Quote Selected
