this lathe can do a valve job????????????

my cousin saw the thing yesterday, and insists I could do a 5-angle valve job with it.
 
it was my dad's, he had built up quite a portion of a machine shop in our basp00get.
 
i cant find much information on the gains this would result in. does anyone know if this would be worth doing? how much skill would it require of me (assuming the thing is even set up to do it!)? more importantly with my setup, how much hp/tq would I stand to gain?
 
just wondering, hp free of $$$ is always good right!?:hick:

Aside from the Mustang crinkle headers, still looks like it's only 150 HP...

You could cut mulit-angles on the valves themselves, but you won't gain anything or at least not enough to notice. Multi-angle valve jobs are describing the SEAT angles ground in the head. Most racing valves have the single seat angle, then sometimes a back-cut to narrow the seat and remove weight. But the serious racing valves have the seat angle, and then the rest is profiled with various curves to maximize weight reduction yet maintain strength and stiffness. Same with seats in the heads. ALL heads should have a 3 angle valve job, but unless racing rules don't allow it, you are better off with a radius blend into the chamber and port rather than multiple angles. Although cutting multple seat angles helps if you are using non-CNC head machines. They can always be hand blended, and have been for years.
I'm afraid the lathe won't help you.

Unless you do it all the time, of which, I am a machinist and have been for 28 years. I would suggest you pay a professional to do it. It would be a little tough for an unskilled person to do it on that machine.
On the other hand it could be done on that by a skilled machinist such as myself.:)

it wouldn't result in much of a gain, but it couldn't hurt it either. just don't tear the heads off just for that. you'll be disappointed. lol

I would love to have a lathe like that but I sure would not do a valve job on it.  It would be hard to get them all a like and you still would have to have the seats cut.

A lathe is a fun tool but I cannot justify the expense of owning one, both in money and the room it would take up in the shop.

okay guys thats what i wanted to know!!!
 
he said (hes going to SUNY Morrisville for auto tech) "yeah we did a 5 angle valve job JUST THAT on a chrysler 440 and got like 40 horsepower" so naturally i got excited and figured id get like 10 or 15 on mine.
 
oh well.:(  i still love the lathe though and ill bet ill find some other use or it. maybe LEARN how to do a valve job with it and find ppl that want one and make some $$$ :evilgrin:

get you a Serdi and do all the valve jobs your heart desires.

I'd love a lathe, it'd be something that'd be sweet to have.  I'd make the most randome shyte outta it, but it'd be fun.
