Lots of black smoke from tailpipe has ecu died?

Hi guys , can anyone help me with my smoking problem on my '83 couger? All she does now when you start her up is blow huge clouds of black smoke from the tailpipe, the injectors in the cfi unit are working overtime.I've checked the sensors individually and all wiring back to the ecu , and found no faults. The only way she will run is if you unplug the memcal unit from the top of the ecu when she runs at I'm guessing with fixed injection pulses and ignition timing, but you can't really drive her.Has the eeciii got any self diagnostics ? or does it sound like the ecu or memcal has blown up, has anyone had this happen to them. I'm pretty sure it's the ecm or memcal but any help would be appreciated.

you have a run away system(everytime a car like yourshiznits the repair shop the mechanics run away!:flip: :shakeass: ). the EEC lll does have a diagnostic port, but you need a test light to use it. get this book from amazon. it has everything you need to walk you through troubleshooting the EEC lll system.

Is it a 5.0 or a 3.8? If it's a 5.0, I have no less then 2 spair computers if you need one.

I do not know if this applies to EEC III or not, but the test on EEC IV for the EEC being in LOS mode (limp home mode) is: With the engine not running and the ignition in run, the fuel pump continues to run. If the EEC is working it runs for a second or two and shuts off.

Oh man I know your problem!!!!!!  Its the coolant sensor!  Change it now!  I got my 83 5.0 cougar for a song because it was blowing black smoke so bad it wouldn't run..  Coolant sensor!!!

Hi guys , coolant sensor looks fine resistance changes as engine warms up and ecu doesn't respond to dummy variable resistor in place of coolant sensor, all wiring is intact to ecu ,I'll let you know the outcome! Thanks for your help.

After more careful checking ,I've fitted a new ecu and she's fixed!:D
