This was in response to an ad I had listed on another site...he offered to send me a $9k check for me to deposit and pay his "shipper" the remaining balance....this is how you get screwed and are responsible for that money.

If admins could post a warning in all the classifieds sections it would be a great service to everybody that just is tryin to get a few bucks for parts.

Thanks and watch out,
Don

Yep. Seen this happen a couple times. Basicly, he writes you a check, you deposit it and write a check to his shipper. Then his check bounces and you're stuck dealing with the bank.

Send him an e-mail and get a phone number and a physical address for him, don't accept a PO box. Then call and confirm the number and confirm the address exists. If he refuses, call the cops.

I would just deposit it and wait for it to clear. I always take that policy with what ever I do.

It actually does clear because it is from a legit account.  The problem is the check number isn't valid.  So it bounces later.  Happened to a friend of a friend

I received these a couple of times.  One from ebay and one from craigslist.  I took his email account and signed him up for all sorts of automatic news letters and emails.  Some of which he had to confirm and some of which he didn't, they just started coming.

Checks, at least my personal checks, are not even required to have a check number. Check number is simply there for my record keeping.
