little help please

well ive been tryin to get the parts together to get my 84 cougar running but i think i may just buy another car for now.  and work on the cougar later.  the other car happens to be an 86 cougar i beleive lol  3.8 auto (c5 i think)  what i need help with is 1: what to look for to make sure transmission is fine aka doesnt slip shifts properly.  i know the fluid needs changed but smells fine (not like burnt toast)  anything else to check for?
        Sincerely,
                    Eric

yeah if you live where there is rust gotta look at the core support the lower shock towers and the floors and trunk for any holes.

well i know you have a 84 so you know what to look for really like if the windows work properly things like that. Also find out if it has the origional head gaskets. we all know how those 3.8s love head gaskets.
