Calling all 5.0 swap guys!!!

Got a ? for you folks who have done the swap. My head gasket went on the 3.8 (no surprise) I got the motor apart not quite done yet too much rain with no garage. I got to thinking and I really want the 5.0 but was wondering how much realistically would I be looking on spending on the swap? I know I cant get an exact figure but I am looking for ballpark numbers. I can spend the money on the new gasket set and put it back together but if its not too much I practically got it all the way out might as well just look into it now.....

shop around for an 87-96 F150 302 and put an HO cam in it.  instant HO engine. I did the swap into my 79 this way and had awesome results but my parts were basically free.

Well, since you are starting with a V6, you'll need:

1988-ONLY!! engine harness (ASSuming you refer to the car in sig..)
V8 brackets (not the mounts themselves-they interchange between V6 and V8, but the brackets the mounts bolt to, or else Chuck's mounts..)

You'll also probably want (need, hint hint) to upgrade your fuel pump, and may as well go 255lb.-hour here...

88turbo is correct in that 87-96 truck engines will work for an HO conversion, as they already have the E7 heads, but you'll need to locate an HO upper/lower intake, as the truck stuff is way different, and won't clear a stock hood anyway.

One other thing...there is a bit of difference in the fuel lines between v6 and v8 cars, I've noticed. The 6 cyl. cars lines seem to be shorter, and enter the engine bay in a different location than the factory 5.0 cars. I was going to do this swap to 2 different 3.8 cars, when i found my Sport.

I've sold all the misc. HO stuff I'd acquired to convert a standard 5.0 engine though, or I'd hook ya up. I DO have a set of E7 heads...but would be more than they're worth to ship, considering the availability, and the price of aftermarket heads these days...

So while I can't give you a figure, I will say that roughly you'd spend about a grand to convert your 3.8 Cougar to an HO, give or take.

Just depends on if you're patient, or know of some Stangs being parted or whatnot.

BTW, the '88 V8 harness is pretty ed rare...I have one spare, that came out of the Sport, but the alternator wires have been boogered up, and someone before me replaced about 10 or 12 inches of the wiring. I'd guess it had a fire, but it could be repaired to better than new. I just had another one that I bought when I was still going to convert my 3.8 car.

It's a pretty common swap, so don't be discouraged, if your car is pretty nice, I'd go for it. :D

Well it will definitely be cheaper to just replace the head gasket on the 3.8L, than drop a 5.0L in.  I did the 3.8L to 5.0L swap on my car, and it wasn't a cheap swap. I probably have close to $2000 into the swap, but my engine is totally rebuilt, and I purchased mostly new or reman parts, such as the front end accessories, radiator, all new a/c components, high vol fuel pump, etc.

You could probably due the swap for under $1000 if you can find a salvage engine, and have a 5.0L parts cars. It really depends what your access is to the 5.0L specific parts.

Thanks to all who answered I think for now the timing and my budget will only allow the replacement of the head gasket... But I will be doing the swap and I think imma find a 5.0 mustang parts car to work off of... Anyone near upstate NY is welcome to come over to my swap party (LOL) when I have it....

Getting a donor 5.0 Stang would be a good call....not only do you get the engine, (hopefully) you'll get the bigger brakes, swaybars, wheels, and some other miscellaneous doo-dads.

Just remember though, you will still need the mount brackets, Tbird/Coug engine harness, and the fuel line mods.

If I were you, I'd start looking for the tbird V8 harness now...they're kinda hard to find...good 5.0HO's are a LOT easier to come across. ;)

I have an 88 harness incoming. Pm me if interested.

I did my swap for under $200. I bought an 87 bird parts car with a v8. The only thing I needed was an 88 v8 engine harness. It cost me $135 to get it from sc. They are rare which is why I got another one incoming to have, incase I need it. The guys here can tell you, I looked for a long time before I found it.

If I were you, I'd get an explorer motor and a stock cougar/bird/mustang/mark7 motor. Then  swap the timing cover with your fox one, get the gt-40 heads and intake/throttle body and use the fox wiring. It would be easiest to get a wrecked cougar/tbird and buy an explorer motor. that way you have a good intake and motor. The mustang motors have forged pisons that are stronger then the gt-40's.

Basically stock mustang block and timing chain cover and gt-40 top end.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
