Budget AOD upgrades?

Im doing a 5.0 swap in my V6 car. I dont have access to a full T5 swap as of yet, so im going to just stuff the 5.0 in, backed with the V6 AOD.

Since the 5.0 wont be stock, and the V6 tranny is high milage, i know it wont hold up for very long, especially with my driving.

I know a tanny cooler will help out, but is there much more i can do to help prolong the life of it untill i get a 5-speed setup? Also keep in mind, ill be junking this thing once i get a 5-speed in it, so im not interested in sinking much into it.
It's Gumby's fault.

swap in a SC tranny. i can get one for 150 so you should be able to find one fairly cheap. and at the cost to upgrade you will spend just as much

Looks like the perfect solution...

How many miles are on it? I wouldn't put in a shift kit with high mileage. How much hp is this HO going to be putting out? If you don't beat on it the AOD should be fine for a year or two. I hope :D

180K on it. Horsepower? Who knows, itll be a good bit more than 225.

I'd say at that point just drain it and change the fluid and filter and hope for the best. If it shifts ok now it *should* be ok behind the HO for a bit. Try this article and see if it helps any:  http://www.lincolnsonline.com/tech/00060.html

At this point you can't do much to beef the AOD up with out major upgrades/cost.

The thing shifts like a champ, and doesnt even have 5K on it since the last fluid/filter change, so i know its in good shape, i was just hoping for anything to help it last a little longer with my lead foot.

Guess ill toss a tranny cooler on it, and hope it lives

Yep at this point the tranny cooler is your best bet. The only way to make it really bullet proof is a rebuild, shift kit, and a new torque converter. That however costs $$$$ and since you're replacing the AOD with a T5 at some point just hope for the best with the V6 AOD:hick:

What's up:D

I'm new to the board and just installed a TCI Transscat shift kit in my 88t-bird, so-ho 5.0, sn paxton, 92K. It shifted like  before. I couldn't even feel the shifts. I didn't want to burn up the trans and the shift kit definately helped. I wouldn't hesitate to put one in. It will shift to about 5k. 1-2 shift is adequate but 2-3 is perfect. It may have a better 2-3 shift since it probably into the boost more. The factory lcd tach keeps me from knowing the exact shift rpm but a monster tach will be better . The 1-2 shift could be more firm and the shift rpm a little higher. Hence a transgo shift kit is on order which should help more. The a+ overdrive band servo will be next. Those 2 items(transgo and servo) would be about $200. With those 2 items you might be able to put off that 5spd. for a little while.

lol. I forgot. That 6cyl. aod might have a looser converter(more stall) in it. A street/strip shift kit might really wake it up and 5.0 with 'a good bit more than 225' hp. If it goes...it will go out fighting at least before the 5spd. lol

Do you plan on driving it until it goes and THEN swap in the 5 speed or just gonna swap in the 5 speed at a certain time regardless?  You could always sell it for a few bucks if it's still together if you swap the 5 speed in and the AOD still lives.....
