Just got shafted...literally

I just purchased a trans under the pretense that it was an Art Carr Extreme AOD with one piece input shaft, transbrake, electric o/d, no lock-up and a 9.5" convertor...all for $1700.

Turns out it is certainly NOT what I wanted...if it IS an art carr trans, it's the cheapo model that sells for $1500 NEW...I still have yet to inspect the valvebody...for all I know, there may not even be a valvebody in there....in which case, I may have to drive 7.5hrs to beat somebody's @$$ with a softball bat.

Man,that SUCKS !!!! I hope this all works out for you.Can you get your money back and just get another tranny somewhere else?

Well, upon doing some more inspecting of the trans...I found that it IS indeed an art carr tranny...just the $1500 version.  The 3-4 shift acspoogeulator has been removed...which makes sense since the "extreme" valvebody was installed and it now has electric overdrive.  I also found that the output shaft is mighty loose in there...I thought it wouldn't have any play at all, but it does.  Also, I can turn the small inner input shaft by hand, but I can't even budge the large outter input shaft...and those who know me, know I'm not low on brute strength when I need to be.

So I just picked up an AOD rebuild manual so I have an idea of how I need to take it apart.

I sent that guy a PM on corral.net but he has yet to answer...I would hope to atleast get some of my money back... dishonerable mustang guys.  Oh well, I'll keep you guys afloat of the situation.

I don't think your supposed to be able to move the outer shaft by hand.
My lentech street terminator aod that i bought is brand new and i can spin the inner by hand but the outer won't move at all.
I think that's normal.

isn't the outer the part that reaches in the converter and gives it a force to act upon while its spinning?

Yeah, apparently I'm a moron and got worked up for nothing...lol.  I saw an exploded view of an AOD and realized my mistake...I suppose that proves that I haven't looked at an AOD without a convertor in well...ever.  I called the guy and told him to disregard that PM I sent him...however I am still a little concerned with the output shaft wiggle, but it is what he said it is, so if I have to do a little work to bring it back to what it should be, that's fine.

So, not only did I stick my foot in my mouth but apparently I swallowed hard too :wtf:

So, does it have two input shafts (one hollow + one inside it) or just one?

The solid input shaft replaces the two concentric shafts and eliminates the "lockup" feature of the AOD transmission. The torque converter uses a C-6 style input shaft spline which is only compatible with the Art Carr one-piece input shaft. The advantages of this configuration are its superior strength and the reduced engine RPM drop during the 2-3 shift. Disadvantages include less efficient operation, hotter operation and a loss of fuel mileage due to ever-present converter slippage, as well as a softer 2-3 shift and the need for transmission disassembly to install the press-fit input shaft.[/COLOR]

Yeah, it definitely is a one piece input shaft.  I called the guy and told him to disregard the hell out of the PM that I sent him, he got a laugh out of it...lol.

The output shafts will have a little play in them... The STD AOD have what looks like three shafts.
