air pump

I've seen 'smog pump removed' as a mod on alot of posts.  Is that the air pump?  What's the advantage?  What's the steps to removing?  Does the piping need to be removed?  1987 3.8L.

I got rid of all my smog  for a cleaner engine bay, plus,it's WAY easier to deal with the right side header now.No smog checks here, though.
