So what does it mean when a tranny slips in overdrive and then doesn't catch until a minute or so later?

It's an A4LD....of course....just rebuilt....I haven't driven it yet so I'm not too clear on the situation.  This is what I know, my brother has been driving the TC to make sure it is safe and not leaking anything so I can give it back to my GF.  He said after about a half hour of driving, it just started slipping.  He said it feels like it jumps out of gear into neutral.  Then after stopping, it takes about a minute for the car to be able to move, only to repeat this sympton everytime it shifts into 4th.  It shifted fine when I drove it.  I'm hoping it is the adjustment to the OD band.

I'm just looking for some feedback as I can't drive it til tomorrow night.  He said the fluid is fine.  Thats all the info I have...I'm in the dark until tomorrow.  Any help and optimism would be appreciated....it's been a better part of a year since I started fixing the car.  I just want to be done with it so I can relax on my days off!

Sounds like the governer weights are sticking and/or the governer spring(s) are broken/missing. This would cause a loss of line pressure which would result in the trans not operating properly, if at all. I highly doubt it is a valve body leak, but I could be wrong. The overdrive band is not used in first gear, so I doubt that is the issue.

Out of curiosity, what happend when you place the trans in Drive (not Overdrive)? Does the trans seem to freewheel briefly when you try to accelerate after coasting at high speeds in thrid gear?

If you rebuilt the trans, unfortunatly you will have to pull it and check the governer. It wouldn't hurt to double check the torque on the valve body bolts at the same time. If a shop did the work, let them worry about it.

I am having the same problem. I however have noticed that if I use the throttle carefully it will shift with out slipping. How would I find out if it is the govener or not? If I have the codes read will it tell me that or???
