What's the Deal?

I was driving over to Muncie, IN today for work from Lafayette, IN and in that little 1 to 2 hour drive I noticed 1 cougar for sale and 3 tbirds for sale?  What is up with everyone getting rid of these things? Gas making them sale em?

It's a good thing and a bad thing.  In some areas it's really hard to find these for sale.

You know what's strange?
I was driving on the Penn. Parkway on my way to Cat Jam Saturday morning. I took an exit because I needed some gas, but the gas station was still two miles from the parkway.
I saw a NICE two-tone Thunderbird parked with a for sale sign in the windshield. I really wanted to stop and look at it, but I was very short on time.
I mean, this thing looked so mint.

I've noticed a few more lately, but most are ratted out.  None for sale though around town...not that I need ANOTHER car though :giggle:

As far as folks getting rid of them...they are getting "old" in the eyes of the general populace.  The newest 4-eye is 20-yrs old, and the youngest period is 18....so to most they are a little long in the tooth.  Some folks just don't care....some folks, like me, fall in love every time we walk up to them.....

Hell I haven't seen a four eye on the road around here in over 3 years and I haven't seen one at the wreakers in over a year. I very rarely see 87-88 T-birds or Cougars around here either. If I do see one driving it's usually clapped out. The 87-88s do show up at the wreakers though. Usually they have 1-4 of them there. They are getting rare though around here. Think about it how many 80's cars do you see on the road on a regular basis anymore? The newest 80's cars are 17 years old. That's what I get for living in the rust belt. If you want cars to last you have to put them away in the winter like I do with the T-bird.

Around here ( Ohio) I've only seen one 4 eye and thats right next door to my grandma's. It's an 84 Thunderbird Elan I think.

I still see a lot of them on the road in various conditions but only one for sale. It is a blue '84 Cougar with a 3.8 and it is trashed. There's not one body panel that isn't damaged and the lower half of the car is coated in that black rust converter stuff.

I went searching at 6 junkyards friday morning looking for parts for the '86.
One place has a complete '85 Cougar which was a great start and it's 3 miles away from me. Wohoo!
Another place had 4 '83-'88 cars but got rid of them all 3 weeks ago.
One place had 3 '87-88 T-birds with no rust or other body damage.
Another place had an '86 T-bird that was complete minus the header panel and bumper.
The remaining 3 places didn't have any left as they say the cars are too old and they crush them...

It's now starting to hit me. These things were very plentiful in my area but now are becoming more scarce each day.

Im in colorado on vacation right now. I saw a Four eye Bird with a blacked out grill, headlight buckets, and the Blue Max Striping below the trim. It was a gold Bird, black accents, and the striping was black. Thought it was cool.

Every now and then on my way home from work if I leave late I see a 4-eyed turbo coupe going eastbound on the long island expressway it must be his baby cause he’s in no rush doing 55 in the middle lane taking it easy and I pass him w/traffic in the left lane doing 65-70.He must work by where I live cause I scene him on RT.110 while I was getting gas. So that explains why I see him so much where on the same road for about 25-30 miles everyday at the same time. I really want to bump into him one day check out his car. But besides for wanting to go home at the end of a day I know he just wants to go to work and he’ll probably think I’m crazy if I tried waving him down.
And around here on long island theses cars are hard to find in bone yards there’s just not enough demand to keep them in stock. I guess they just crush them for weight. That’s why I’m trying to take certain parts and hold them the problem is I can only hide so much in the garage.

I think the 4 eyed cats n birds are starting to really disapear. I see plenty of 87-88 birds n cats still though. There seems to be quite allot of the foxes in my area yet. This is about 15 minutes from me:

I'd love to buy it, but a v-6 for that much, hmm.....

I see very very few Fox bodies around my town anymore (20 miles East of Houston, a town of about 65,000+). Still lots of MN-12s, some nice, most not. There is one older gentleman I had seen around several times in a Fox Cougar, and I got a chance to talk to him in the grocery store one day recently...seems he is the original owner of an '85 which now has something like 217,000 miles!

I used to go to the big pick-a-parts and other wrecking yards in Houston like 6-12 years ago. '83-'88s were not too uncommon, but the '87-88s were harder to come across (presumably because they were still "newer" at that time...). Now the last frew times I have gone back, seems I am out of luck - nobody around here is keeping anything over 10 years old in their yards anymore! They just get crushed. So going to any yards around here is pretty much an exercise in futility for me. I am jealous of those of you that still have them available near you.

Something kinda scary to me - my Cat Jam trek is a little over 3,000 miles round trip. This year I did not pass nor was I passed by any other Fox T-Bird or Cougar on any of the Interstates I travelled. Seems to me that most of the ones that are left don't get far away from home too much! On a little side trip off the highway to get some gas in a little corner of nowhere, I did spot a mint-looking Mark VII LSC that had just gone through a carwash. It was literally being driving by a couple of little old ladies ever slowly down the street. Had "disabled" liscence plates even! I SO wanted to come up next to them and wave them over, but I figured I might scare them too much! :D
