A4ld ? June 26, 2006, 04:58:34 PM From reading through forums like this one, I've noticed that the TC's with the A4LD were limited to 150hp, while the TC's with T5's were rated at 190hp. Are the A4LD's so fragile that they can't handle any more power than that? I'd like to tweak this car (increase the boost, among other mods). If the A4LD's are that limited in their power handling abilities, I'll have to eventually make plans for another tranny (like an AOD). Thanks for any help in advance guys.Vic Quote Selected
A4ld ? Reply #1 – June 26, 2006, 05:12:04 PM I don't think an AOD bolts to a 2.3T. The 4ALD is rather weak, however I know a guy who has one in a Turbo Coupe and he runs 13.98s with cranked up boost. I couldn't say how long it'll last like that though. Quote Selected
Wow! Reply #2 – June 26, 2006, 05:24:02 PM The impression I got from reading some articles about A4LD's basically claimed that if you tried to turn up the boost on them to T5equipped power settings, you'd have a hand grenade on your hands. You know how that goes. Some tranny probably would handle it fine, some wouldn't. Thanks for the info rhough man.Vic Quote Selected
A4ld ? Reply #3 – June 26, 2006, 06:28:14 PM i bought my parts car from a guy with a auto tc that hit the 13s he put in a new tranny tho, dont know how long it would have lasted if he didnt kill the #4 piston. u can always swap in a t5 tho. Quote Selected
A4ld ? Reply #4 – June 26, 2006, 09:42:57 PM A4LD's do suck, trust me...many guys have grenaded them behind naturally aspirated 2.3's (i.e. 88-105 hp) in Mustangs.I think they can kinda hold up with a performance rebuild of some sort but they're still not that great. Most guys swap to a C4, but you have to find one from a Pinto with a 2.3 and I've heard they're tough to track down. Quote Selected
A4ld ? Reply #5 – June 26, 2006, 09:55:51 PM I just rebuilt the one that goes into my girlfriend's 88 TC. It was leaking out of every oriface and was slipping in almost every gear. They are a bit weak, but if you know how to tweak it, they'll last with some mods. While I was at it, I put in a shift kit. Also I had a 4R55E from a mid to late 90's 4.0l vehicle right next to the TC one. It is the exact same except for some updated parts and valve body. The 4R55E is a good trans. The A4LD is also a good trans if taken care of, set up correctly, and not pounded constantly. We'll see in the coming months as I finish up her TC. It should be pushing 200-220 hp once I'm done with it. The trans should hold up now that I have some fresh clutches and bands, a firm shifting valve body, and someone who knows how to adjust the bands correctly. Quote Selected
A4ld ? Reply #6 – June 27, 2006, 11:45:39 AM The "peformance" rebuild of the A4LD is to fill it with the Explorer internals which beefs it up a bit.It just costs an arm and a leg to rebuild an auto trans...but if you HAVE to have an automatic and an OD on a 2.3, that's what you're stuck with. To mate an AOD to a 2.3, you would need an adpater plate to get it to the 5.0 bell pattern, etc, etc... Quote Selected
Thanks for the great help guys Reply #7 – June 27, 2006, 05:14:33 PM I really appreciate it. It looks like I have my work cut out for me. I eventually plan on taking out the 2.3 and putting in a Windsor, backed by an AOD. To get good performance out of this car, it looks like that's what I'll have to do.Vic Quote Selected

Hi Nate Reply #9 – June 28, 2006, 11:36:17 AM From what the guys on NATO say. I'd detonate an A4LD,if I did much ata ll to my engine. I can definitely drive a stick. I'm just an automatic fanatic. When I install a built Windsor into this car. I plan to back it with an AOD.Vic Quote Selected
A4ld ? Reply #10 – June 28, 2006, 11:43:49 AM Hell, if you're gonna put a V8 in it why bother messing with the 2.3 anyway. Quote Selected
