Starting problems...Help! April 23, 2006, 03:04:43 PM Alright for the past week or so i have had a bit of issues with the starter in the cougar. it sounded like it was making a mild grinding noise simular to what it was making when it had loosened off on me a week or so before. But now the griding got really bad it sounded like the starter was tearing itself apart.....now all it does is freewheel without spinning the engine over. My roomate keeps insisiting that there is a flat spot in the flywheel and that chagining the starter will not fix it. Another roomate thinks its just a messed up bendix...all in all either way im screwed...i cant get the starter off myself because i cant get at the upper bolt on it with my larger hands...Im basicly at my wits end with this thing. and i have no money to replace it..hell i barely have enough to fix it...and this car is my daily driver... Starting problems...Help! Reply #1 – April 23, 2006, 04:27:41 PM ok...someone can lock this now...figured out how to fix it...either i do have a flat spot on the flywheel or the bendix is messed up..i tried fixes to both when i was under the car so its a matter of seeing which one does the job if it does it again...basicly i rotated the crank a bit by hand as well as gave the starter a couple good shots with a hammer to knock the bendix loose again if that was it...
