Anyone knowledgable on clutches...got a question

A couple months ago I bought an OE replacement (Valeo) clutch for my TC, but recently I decided I'd like something a little better than stock. I had originally wanted to sell the Valeo and buy a Spec stage 2, but I can't seem to sell the Valeo (even on ebay) and the Stage 2 kit is $275. So, I've been considering alternatives that utilize the valeo kit. Two ideas I had:

1. Using the Valeo pressure plate but buying a better clutch disc from clutchnet.com (the one I would like to use is $145)

2. Using the Valeo clutch disc, but getting a Centerforce II pressure plate (about $140).

Since they're both about the same price, which one would be be the most effective?

Don't waste your money on an aftermarket clutch like that. If you drag your car on slicks or have high horsepower then go with a better clamping clutch. Just to let you know, my 90 Mustang with the original clutch at 90k was still holding strong at the dragstrip with drag radials and that was with my stock motor. Now I have a built 306 with a new oem replacement clutch that I launched at 6,000 rpm's with the drag radials about 25 times without any issues of slippage. So save your money and stick with the oem. If my built 306 can't make it slip then I highly doubt your car will.

do not use the valeo disc or pressure plate... autozone junk.

Buy a good clutch such as a spec or centerforce. You will thank yourself in the end.

Umm..what do you think Ford oem is? Most if not all clutches are made by Valeo or Dakin. Your Ford cluthes ARE Valeo!

Well I had originally wanted a Luk, and ordered what I thought was gonna be a Luk from a website, and they sent me the Valeo. Everyone told me Valeo and Luk were more or less the same thing.

Anyway...well, the Luk never slipped on me last year,  and between then and now all I'm changing is the cam... it's just that everyone over on turboford makes it sound like if you have anything significant done to your engine (which I do), that the stock clutch will slip. :dunno:

You got to remember that the 2.3 clutch is a lot smaller than a 5.0.  Looking at your mods, you'll probably want at least a spec stage II.  You could stick that OEM one in and tell us how long it lasts though :)

BTW, In my stock '86 TC, I relpaced with OEM 30k miles ago and it's still going strong with countless 5500 rpm dumps and teaching a few people how to drive a stick.

Im sure they have differant lines of product ie low/high grade. The auto zone valeo clutch i put in my t/c when it was still a 2.3 lasted about week under 25 psi. I had a custom clutch built at a local clutch shop dirt cheap and it never slipped. I later swapped to a
c-4.

I would like a stage 2, but like I said, right at the moment I don't want to lay out $275...especially since I have $110 in this Valeo clutch that nobody wants to buy from me.

Dammit.

Trust me they don't. Valeo is Valeo. One thing I did forget about is that your clutches are smaller than the V8 ones. My bad! I would upgrade to a mustang clutch if possible but if it is cheaper to by an aftermarket high performance clutch then do it. What size is the 2.3 clutch?

The 2.3 clutch is 9 1/2" diameter. I don't believe you can simply upgrade to a V8 clutch, or so I've been led to believe.

I have a Luk clutch (oe) in the car now that held up to basically how the car is set up now, except that I'm gonna be putting in a different cam. So I dunno...

I just purchased a Spec Stage 3 plus. I consider it money well spent. Now the clutch wont be slipping in 3rd 4th and 5th gear under 10 psi boost getting on the freeway. Its just the cost you have to pay when you slap two turbos on a v8. As far as switching discs with diffrent pressure plates you can do it but as far as an improvement of holding power the only way you can find out is by trial and error or if you know the coeffcient of friction of the disc and the pressure in Ft/lbs being applied to the disc and the diameter of the clutch disc. I am not sure of the formula off hand be you should be able to find it. There it is straight to the point for ya
