The car dies without warning? That ain't your cluster.

I'd bet it's the ignition switch. Even though your Cougar is an MN12 it uses the same fire-pr0ne ignition switch that our Foxes do. Call your Ford dealer with your VIN and you may even get it replaced free (it's under recall)

Your cluster is activated off the ignition switch as well. If it didn't the cluster would stay on all the time even with the key off. If its still under recall they should be able to help no matter what year. If not go to autozone or something and pick up a new one and switch it. Be careful not to scratch the new one up. If it doesn't fix it then you can always take it back and tell them it didn't work. Ive actually started my car with the cluster completely out of the car so the cluster shouldn't kill the car unless Im missing something. The only thing it did was run the battery dead from the alternator circuit being broken Im guessing. An ignition switch isn't very expensive I think mine was like 12 bucks. That's a whole lot cheaper then replacing the entire cluster unless you run across a great deal. Even on Ebay my cluster was 25 without shipping.
