show amps?

ok has anyone seen these amps with a plasma sphere in the middle of them? power acoustik makes them. I think they look cool as hell but the problem is unless we mount them in the floor board or somewhere like that no ones going to see it unless the trunks open. how exactly do we fix that? I came up with an idea but it involves cutting out the rear deck as well building a box with multiple contours to put it all together. Im not sure if the rear deck is a structural part of the car or if its just there to fill the space as well as have somewhere to mount the rear speakers. the only other problem I could find is you would have to remove the bars that hold the trunk lid up which would mean either an axe handle or prop rod or a hydraulic rod attached to the trunk hinge and to a different portion of the body. youd loose some of your trunk space but it would really only be the ammount under the rear deck which I dont really use anyway. it could also be made so that the rear speakers actually bolt into the top of the box on each side. the amp would be mounted in the middle of the box on top so you could see it by looking back and looking through the back window downward. which brings us to a problem with security with an amp sitting only inches below nothing but a piece of glass. I think it would be cool though. the subs could be heard better inside the vehicle as well because they wouldnt have to play through the rear seat and the rear deck. also it would cover up the rear seat if you dont have the cardboard covering piece which I dont. with some work I think it would work good and be something totally different that might actually be cool what do you all think?

I know when I do things, I do it for myself and not others.  I do what I think would look/perform best.  It is a unique install and I haven't seen anything like that.  Would I do it? No.  That doesn't mean that you can't.  Do what makes you happy!

personally....i dont want people too know whats in my car at all if i can help it. unless it was strictly a show car for shows...

in my car, I mounted my amps up in the front of the trunk on the back side of the rear seat/shelf bracing.
I took 2 pieces of plywood, cut to the shape of tha amps' respective bases, mounted the amps, then bolted the boards to the metal.
I used plywood so the amps wouldn't short out...
The speakers boxes are easily removable if I need to haul something bigger than a mini-spare...
I'd say it'd take at least 20 minutes minutes for someone to get my amps out, trunk being shut notwithstanding.
Dunno why anybody'd want them anyhow, they're only Legacy amps...

what do you mean by short out? they shouldnt ground through the case unles the power touches it....right
 
i never realy thought about that. mine are screwed into the deck upsidedown between the rear speakers...

Shame, so your saying you have your amps mounted upside down beneath the rear deck?  That's the worst way to mount amps because the heat can't escape properly.  The heat rises from the cooling fins so instead of the heat rising away from the amp, it's actually just rising back towards the amp.

Now on topic, I have my amps mounted beneath a piece of clear acrylic.  The way it is now, it looks as if the amp box/rack I made is actually built into the bottom of the trunk. I built the box down inside of the big well in the trunk.  I have computer fans mounted in the amp box as well to cool down the amps.  I'll have to take pics of my setup and post them.

as far as pulling out the rods, unless u have some other way to hold it its a royal pain in the ass. we put 6x9 4 ways in the back of my bros escort to replace the 5 1/4 stock ones, and the suport rodshiznit so we just pulled them out, and god  that thing is heavy. o well the car ****ing pounds now. next step new deck, and subs o boy more work for me

Yeah, few years ago, I hit a deer one night, and an amp came loose from it's mount, and the case touched some metal somewhere, all that I remember seeing was a shiznitload of sparks, and then a fireball.
Needless to say the amp was toast (literally) and most of the wiring was as well. It may have been the brand of amp I was using, wish I could remember what kind it was...
Ever since then, I've always mounted my amps really well, and insulated them, just to make sure.
Knowing my luck, I'd crank some Godsmack or something, and my trunk would burst into flames.

huh...ive never had a problem with the way mine are mounted. maybe your positive came loose or frayed and grounded to the case or chassis? either way, you cant be too safe i suppose...

well on the rods being out I was thinking maybe weld a bolt to the hinge and hook one of the hydraulic rods to it that are used for holding hatchbacks up. weld another bolt underneath the rear deck in where it wont interfere with the box. On that brace that goes up the side of the deck which the trunk lid is bolted to.
the only part that would come out I guess would be in between the hinges unless you can figure out some way to hide it.
The rod would extend as you lift the trunk lid and theoretically hold the trunk up.
You could mount 6X9"s in the top like the factory speakers are. then the side going into the trunk you could either angle or make straight depending on what looks best. Then the subs would be mounted there. Instead of being flat on the bottom of the trunk like in Eric's box they would be the same angle as the box.
I tried Eric's box in my white bird. It worked great and I have to give him credit on it for being a cool idea. The problem I had was that if I was hauling anything in the trunk which I occasionally do it, covered the subs. I was always afraid that something on top of them would cause them to blow since they couldn't circulate the air away from the front of the speaker.
The idea of the upright box was actually just supposed to go up to the rear deck but then I got creative in drawing and sort of went overboard and come up with removing the rear deck.It would take some serious cutting and moving and fitting but I think it would be cool, or at least something different that doesnt look terrible.

yep, and i know. makes sense but ive had these amps for years and they perform great. maybe with this tbird ill do something different...i dunno.
 
 
besides...not for nothin but they arent exactly cooling any better on the backside of the amp rack and rear seat....

I guess not, lol.
Nah, I've always been told not to let the amp itself touch ANY metal, cause it'd short itself out...I dunno, maybe I was told a line of :bs:
Anyway, in my Tbird, I mounted the amps up front to keep 'em out of the way, and to keep them from sliding and bouncing around.

Never have tested that theory of the case shorting the amp out, guess 
if someone has an amp they'll loan me I'll look into it :evilgrin:

My freind has his amp screwed straight into that peice of metal behind the seat and has never had a problem.
