Hit up the coin-op car wash, which isnt fun when its 27 degrees outside, took a bunch of pics, but not many came out as i hoped (had the camera in the wrong mode)

Its all angles, the parking lot isnt level, and i have a bunch of tools in the trunk. Ive been blowing intercooler hoses off a lot lately.

Once my local L-M dealer gets a row of those borrrrring Montegos I'm gonna park my Cougar in front of them and take a shot.

Wow, I never knew you painted your snowflakes black, those look awesome. They just make it look like a totally different beast. Nice job.

About your painted snowflakes, can you tell me briefly how you did that? I've got a set that are going on an '83 Cougar that is Dark Charcoal Metallic, and the color of your wheels looks very close to my car's body color, and I guess your car's body color, too. The wheels I have need some cleaning; by the way, how do you clean tarnish or whatever it is off of the snowflakes, or any aluminum wheels for that matter? I'm sure a thorough cleaning is the first requirement for a paintjob. Thanks for the pointers.

Well, the color isnt what you think it is. Just the light manipulates it. Its textured black metallic. Its very similar to wrinkle black, but its metallic. Since its textured, it reflects light very differently than a regular finish, making it look like a different color.

But to paint your wheels, it isnt very difficult.

The way i would recommend doing it, is using aircraft stripper on the wheels to get the flaky, hazy clearcoat off of the wheels. From there, go over the wheels with a sanding block and 600 grit sand paper untill theyre smooth, but have a hazy look to them. Clean them VERY well using something that removes grease, like a dish washing detergent. Follow that up with something like acetone or alcohol. Lay your first coats of paint or primer down lightly, just making sure the wheels are covered. Dont worry if the paint looks "transparent", thats somewhat the goal. If you use heavy coats of paint, its harder for the paint to flex and makes it easier to chip. Lay down MANY light coats of your choice of paint. Once thats done, and the paint color is nice and solid, follow it up with a clearcoat in the same manner for the most part.

I do plan on painting another set of wheels, not in the manner i just told you exactly, but if i do paint them before you get to yours, ill go over some of the steps and take pictures.
