Know anything about Linux and Firefox???

Hey gang I just bought a used 900mhz AMD Athlon Comp-a-q(inside joke),with a 19" monitor. It has the aformentioned on it and I'm looking for any BIG do's or don'ts with this thing. At the moment I haven't even hooked it up since bringing it home. I got it at the Goodwill store, so there is no manual, discs, etc.

OK first question... How to set the resoulution???? Right click on the desktop ain't doin it, and I havent found anything in the dropdowns.

EDIT... Never mind found it..... 800x600 on a 19" monitor is [SIZE="5"]HUGE[/SIZE]

Got another one though, where do I find email setup??

which kind of linux? suse, redhat solaris? THere are a million out there. THe kind would help alot. I have suse, mandrake, redhat, a couple of bootable ones. THe version would help alot. Email set up is diffrent on almost all of mine. Also, try a google search with the linix kind, like mandrake email or something of the like. It will help out alot. Also, if you want to convert to windows, or keep windows and linux, it is really easy to do.

What do you think of it so far? I had the time of my life the first time playing with it.

It's Mandriva, which is the new 2006 version of what used to be Mandrake Linux(I know absolutely nothing about any of the Linuxs'). This version has some similarties to windows '98/ME, so maybe I can deal with it.

I found a utility the lets you partition the hard drive, I assume this is without affecting the current install?? What I'm thinking is adding Windows on the second partition, and booting from either till I decide or not if I'm gonna stay with the Linux. Think windows would find the drivers for the video, etc? Would they be different from a windows system??

I haven't messed with it in a couple of days, back on the old 500 for now.

hmm.... I guess I am alittle behind in the linux's now. The problem with adding windows on after linux, is linux is detected by windows as curropted/useless file space(suprise suprise). I have never added linux and then windows. How is this?

yeah, not the best info, didnt have alot of time to read through it. I am sure, if you can get it online, that you could always download an new email client.

hey, one of the best email clients for linux that I've seen in a while has been Evolution. It's got everything I've ever wanted.

You could also just download opera for linux and install it, it comes with its own mail client. Different distributions have different setups, however, and I've never messed with mandriva, but I think that since it uses RPMs for installation packages you will not have too hard of a time finding software for it.

you can use something like rpmfind.net or freshmeat.net to find whatever you desire.

Hey thanks... Guess now I just need get busy diggin up info. My biggest problem with no former knowledge is knowing what to try and what not..

yeah, as long as you have diskspace you can install to your heart's content. the only thing is, don't begin to "free up space" by deleting folders that seem unimportant

do so by removing the packages you installed.

linux can be lots of fun, just wait and see !

Tom in mandrake you have to click on the start button (for lack of a better term) and dig through until you see the icon that looks like a pc board, it has link name as well but I forgot it. In there you will find info on how to change resolutions. Some distro's have it in with the dev listings but in the 2005 mandrake it was by itself (or with the background display, can't remember). You have to watch that you don't place a resolution that the monitor can't handle. Yes your 19" should handle 1600x1200 but alot of linux distro's will have silly resolutions like 2600x1200 wich your monitor can't handle. Try and remember what resolutions you use in Windows and stick with those.

Also a little tip, if you find a program that you wan't to install make sure you download it in RPM format. Not the bin or whatever the others are. RPM stands for Redhat Package Manager. It is kinda like an exe in windows. Problem is some packages need other packages to function, so you'll hunt all over the web to find the right ones. You can even download yahoo messenger for linux now.

I've used many many differn't distro's and Mandrake is one of my favorites, along with lycoris.
