remote keyless entry

so...i was thinking of how nice the remote keyless is in my wifes car. the keypad is kool but i actually have to touch the car to unlock it....ew...so the remote leyless entry would be nice. my question is does anyone have experiance with this? id like to use a ford unit out of a mustang or something. i asume it has its own computer and what not. could it be intergrated into the keyless i already have or would i have to gut that? is it a relitivally stand alone unit or are they somehow integrated heavily into whatever car there in....it sounds like it could be a realy involved install....

I just installed an Autostart remote starter/alarm/keyless entry system. Sure, the fobs don't say Ford on 'em, but it works as good as any factory system plus I get the alarm and remote starter feature as well (though I don't use the remote starter feature much as the car isn't winter driven...)

awesome...thanks guys. that would probably be easier. i like the idea of making something look factory though. depending on how much it would make me suffer anyway.

so as far as the ford one goes though, you can use the "module" from a later escort or taurus and a harness, preferably from the later escort as its simpler?

could i assume one from a mustang would be tha same as well?

now, if i had both evtms than it would be relitivally self explanitory. id just want it to open the trunk and the doors. one door or both doesnt matter much. (there is only one key to open both doors anyway right?)

my car has the light package anyway so i think when the doors unlock the lights come on......i think anyway. at least they do when you touch the doors keypad.

so where dod you actually mount the unit tom? theres plenty of room in the trunk and the factory keyless wireing is already there. but from what it soulds like the unit needs to be wired into the cars relay system and most of the realys are under the dash. its time i take a crash course in creative wiring. the only think ive ever realy wired are car sound systems...

Yea one punch of the unlock or lock button operates both doors. On mine second hit of the unlock powers a GDO xmitter I mounted near the module and opens my garage door... :D

I used sicilone rubber to "glue" the module to the heater plenum, it's directly behind the glove box. Just used some crumpled paper and shut the glove box to hold it in place till the RTV cured. The wiring for the trunk relase, horn relay, and from the passenger door lock/unlock, are all nearby(Also I picked up power for the unit from the fuel filler door sw). I wired mine up back in '02 and has always worked fine.

As far as the modules, I'd be willing to bet every vehicle from Crown Vics, Escorts to Stangs and Taurus used the same module around '99 or so. Basically you want the one without a external antenna. Since you already have keyless(I don't) there may be some differences in hookup, but at this point I can't vision what it may be.

I have done this at least a dozen times. The easiest way is to find a 98-2004 explorer or mountaineer in the junk yard, tip the 2nd row passenger seat foward, remove the upper seat belt bolt (t-50) peel back the interior quarterpanel, unbolt the keyless entry module (7mm), cut the hardshells leaving 4-6 inches of wires. You only need to wire in as much as you want, horn, parking lights are optional. Wiring diagrams are readily available, if you need one for a specific year, just let me know and I can post it. Programing the key fobs is even easier. Turn the key on and off about 9 times, once the door locks cylce, push the unlock button on the fob to program, you can program your wifes vehicle on the same fob as well, or program a 2nd fob. If your at the junk yard, and the vehicle that you are taking the module from does not have a factory fob, search around for a vehicle that does, then bring it home to program. Very easy, and you will have a factory key fob for the remote unlock.
