Tripminder in an '83?

Hey all,
I've got a question.  How would a Tripminder have worked in '83 cars that are not fuel-injected?  What in the world is feeding it information about fuel consumption, etc. when it's a carbed engine?  I'd love to put one in my '83 if it would work.  Somebody clue me in on this one.  Thanks.

From the '84 shop manual:

"The tripminder consists of the tripminder module (display, keyboard, and control module) and a fuel flow sensor. A speed signal is supplied to the module from the electronic instrument cluster (EIC) or from a speed sensor on vehicles with a mechanical cluster.
The fuel flow information on carbureted engines is supplied by a fuel flow sensor. On fuel injected engines the electronic engine control (EEC) module supplies the fuel flow information."

The EVTSM says the fuel flow sensor is mounted "Between the carburetor and the RH fender apr0n." It doesn't have a picture.

The speed sensor looks like a electro/mechanical device. The speedometer cable goes in one side and out the other.

It sounds like the fuel flow sensor is something the fuel flows through.
