2.3T roller followers on aftermarket cams

i have a 420 lift Crane Cam and I have read several places that it is fine to run roller followers on any 2.3 cam. The cam now seems to be "eating" the stock followers and I thought it may be better to run rollers if someone knows for sure if it wont spit them out.

Any help would be appreciated.

what about your valve springs?  they could be bottoming out causing excesive wear on your followers.

I wouldnt think so, but you never know. My friend I got the entire head, cam and all from was having no problems on his car. He blew a gasket and dropped in a 429 so I got the old lima head and cam complete. Now I have wiped out 2 followers. The cam looks fine so Im stummped. If this doest work this time Im going back to the Ranger Roller cam.

you might look into the springs or pull your cover and roll it over and see what they look like compressed

Ive looked at it compressed it all looks fine geometry wise but there is just some little something not right. I am hoping the fact that he let it sit for a few months that it weakened the lifters. I know its a long shot but I can hope..

you can only run roller followers with a roller cam

when you put the cam in, did you put in all new sliders?

No it was all new when my friend put it in around 3000 miles ago. I changed nothing til it started ticking and I found a wiped out tappet

everything was new and matched including valve spring retainers

i put about 3,000 miles on it with absolutley no issues

Yeah, you can't run roller followers with a flat tappet camshaft...:dunno:

What kinda oil were you running?

theres always a debate on it, but ive been told many times that synthetic oil with a slider cam is no good

10w40 valvoline >regular old dinosaur oil :D




i was wondering if a valve was almost froze in the guide maybe from sitting? like he said pulled right off mine and put aside till he came and got it a couple weeks ago :crazy:

I've heard that too, but haven't had any problems running Rotella T synthetic, but it's also a heavy duty engine oil that includes moly and calcium, zinc, etc., for high pressure parts.

I agree that you shouldn't run roller followers with a slider cam.  I have run plenty of sliders on synth with no problem. 2.3 are pretty notorious for cam wear to begin with.
With .420 lift that won't cause any spring interference issues. I'd get new regular followers and follow proper slider cam breakin procedures.
