What is this thing?

Hey guys found this race car while searching the net.  Appears to be some kind of road-race car.  Anyone know what racing series this would have been?  Almost looks like Trans Am racing but I didn't think it had been around for years.

Here is another one except a four-eye.  Oooh I don't know what these things are but they sure are an inspiration for my '88 project!

Trans Am series

Trans Am series has been around since the 70's
It's Gumby's fault.

I thought it wasn't around anymore or maybe it just changed names.
