Ignition and door locks - where to find

Good morning!  I need to replace the ignition switch and door locks on my '86 XR-7.  A body shop broke my OEM ignition switch a few years ago so I've had to keep up with one key to open the doors and another to start the car (which has been driving me batty!).  Now, I've managed to break a part off one of my door locks so....since the door locks are going to have to be replaced, I thought it would be a good time to replace the ignition, too, so I can go back to having only one key (without having to pay a locksmith around $100 to remove and re-key the ignition).  My question is:  is there anywhere that I can buy a SET (ignition and door locks) in black??  I found one set (on eBay) that is all 3 pieces but they say they are for a car  "without theft" and I'm not sure what they mean so I'm hesitant to buy them.  Is there anywhere else that would have entire sets in the black finish that y'all know of (I've already looked at RockAuto and all they have is separate lock and ignitions :(

THANKS!!

Some cars came with an anti theft system from the factory.  If yours has it it would have a light in the center of the console switch panel.  It's fairly uncommon.

I recently did this swap ... similar issue ... had a key that was for my driver's door and ignition and then another for my passenger side door due to a break in/theft issue many moons ago.  Drove me a little crazy at times, but never got around to actually fixing it until recently.  I threw a couple photos up in my Corbeau seat thread awhile ago if you search it.  I bought an NOS set on eBay, the ignition receptacle is black, but the door cylinders are chrome (as they should be for my particular application but I realize not for an XR-7).  The Ford part number for my set was E6SZ-6322050-A.  I would imagine the black set is a similar number ... maybe the same just with a different letter at the end.

Thanks for the info!!!  That gives me a bit more to go on trying to find the right parts!!

Okay, so simply remove your ignition lock cylinder and have it rekeyed to match the doors.  It is super simple to do as it is the same as the Fox Mustangs.  Here are links to the step by step and the video:

Removing your door lock cylinders should be a pretty straight forward task.  I cannot remember if they are exactly like the Fox Mustangs which are done like this:

Or if we have to pull the door panel and the clip is actually inside the door.  A little more work but you can take all the locks out of the car and have a locksmith key them up for not much $$$.

The clip is on the side of the door. You will probably have to remove the door panel to make sure everything fits right, but you can try to do it without as well.

I swapped mine along with doors i  the parking lot one day. 15 minutes or so.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Thankfully, the doors are already apart which is why we figured this would be a good time to solve my lock/key issues.  Husband is replaced the dew wipes on both door and is re-doing everything else inside the doors while he's got the panels off.  We're going ahead and replacing all three locks/switches since the ignition was some sort of cheapy aftermarket that the body shop used when they broke my OEM one (grrr..).  Thanks to 85CougarCobra's information, I was able to track down a NOS set of same-keyed ignition and door locks!!

Hopefully mine will go even quicker since we already have the door panels off to replace the dew wipes :)  THANKS!!

With the double sided keys, it only uses one side to open the lock. You could have a key made with a different pattern on each side. One way up for ignition and the other way up for doors. Don't know if this would be more of a pita than two keys.

I have a feeling that, for me, that would be like trying to plug in a USB plug - 50% chance of getting right - gets it wrong 100% of the time :O
