A/C dilemma on an '86 XR-7 Turbo Cougar July 26, 2016, 04:03:30 PM My mechanic and I are having a MAJOR dilemma in trying to get my A/C working again on my 1986 Mercury Cougar 2.3L turbo. The compressor went out and my mechanic and I have both TRIED to order a replacement from several different places and every one of them has come in looking like the one in this link:http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-CO-58111C-COMPLETE-A-C-COMPRESSOR-AND-CLUTCH-SALE-/351679548463?fits=Year%3A1986%7CMake%3AMercury%7CModel%3ACougar%7CEngine+-+Liter_Display%3A2.3L&hash=item51e1bc0c2f:g:y-UAAOSwmmxW6auw&vxp=mtr Problem IS that the compressor that is actually on my Cat looks like this one:http://www.ebay.com/itm/281247345298?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITHere's the dilemma: Is it possible that for some strange reason my 2.3L came off the assembly line with an a/c compressor that is listed as only having come on a 3.8L of earlier years??? We are LOST but would REALLY like to get my A/C working again seeing as how it's almost 100 degrees here :(THANKS for ANY and ALL advice!! Quote Selected
A/C dilemma on an '86 XR-7 Turbo Cougar Reply #1 – July 26, 2016, 06:20:36 PM Had to go to archive.org, but I believe all '83-'88 2.3 T-birds came with HR980 compressors.https://web.archive.org/web/20040214151246/http://www.polarbearinc.com/Ford14.htmProblem is I don't think it is even possible to get an HR980 anymore. You can't rebuild them - part of the reason for unavailability. Pretty sure there used to be a conversion kit for it (new compressor, compressor mount, and hoses) that ran $500-700. Not sure how easy they are to get now. Also, some later 2.3 Fords used different compressors. Don't know the feasibility for swapping one of them on. Quote Selected
