Axle to rear hanger relationship on Mustang tail pipes

I know the Mustang tail pipes needs to be extended, but how do the hangers line up at the rear? Also how different are the Mustang gas tanks in relation to the axle and hangers? I'm curious if the VRS 3" stainless tail pipes would work if they made the tails extend a bit further past the hanger. The price would sure beat one of the two local shops that have mandrel benders.

I'm hoping that the VRS unit would work, and I can just have a local shop deal with the ler section.

Or are the hangers for the tails also different? I don't remember what ours look like. I could just get the pipes without hangers welded on, and have the shop take care of that.

I have 2.5" mandrel bent Mustang tail pipes on my car. I don't remember if the hangers lined up. If they didn't the exhaust shop cut them off and welded on new ones to match up with the stock Thunderbird hangers.

I was thinking of just having the tail pipe hangers welded on locally. Doesn't help me with the gas tanks though - not sure the VRS pipes will fit. They swing under the tank to clear wider tires.

The Thunderbird tank is wider. I know the 2.5" pipes clear but they are snug in a couple of spots.

The hangers line up almost perfectly, but keep in mind that each used car is different.

I'm guessing the Mustang under-tank run of tails won't work, due to the tank differences. I was hoping they would, but don't want to waste $300 (and try to resell locally) if they may not fit.

Local mandrel-bender shop doesn't have a machine strong enough for the larger pipe in stainless.

Does anyone know more details about the differences between the Mustang and Thunderbird tanks? I'd like to see if I can get VRS to work with me on a custom set.

2.5" pipes are very tight on my '88 XR7.  I can't see how 3" pipes would fit without them banging the tank/frame etc.

I used a MAC 3" mandrel bend cat back kit on my 83 and we simply extended the tail pipes.  Everything worked just fine and after some grinding and filling and grinding on the welds for the extensions the ceramic coating made the tail pipes look like they are one piece.  Thread on my exhaust build is in my signature.  Post #24 on page 3 has the best pictures of the tail pipes.
